Default Gun show loophole

We've been hearing about the 'gun show loophole' for a few years now. The antis in Congress will keep bringing this one around until they get it passed. Let's make sure it doesn't pass.

The current version in the House is H.R. 2324 and in the Senate S. 843. Write or call your reps and tell them you are OPPOSED.

Right now buying or trading for a firearm at a gun show is no different than a transaction that takes place through an ad in the paper, or swapping guns with a buddy at the club. If they get to restrict the gun shows, the ad in the paper and swap with your buddy are next.

Critters in congress try to close the non-existant "gunshow loophole" every year. This bill is much like the one that was sponsored by McCain and Lieberman several years ago.

Currently H. R. 2324 has 70 co-sponsors. S 843 has 15 co-sponsors; 16 if you count the late Ted Kennedy. Neither bill is going anywhere next year. The Democrats are well aware that an attempt to pass gun control is a no no in an election year.

Not to mention the fact that there is no gun show loophole. Every gun bought from a dealer to private person still has to go through a NICS check.

You don't think they'd let a little thing like the truth stand in the way of a perfectly good lie, do ya?

So why were some undercover agents able to pay a little extra to some dealers at the shows and not have to go thru the check?

What on Earth does that have to do with the thread? How does that have anything to do with a supposed "gun show loophole"? Obviously, there wasn't one, or they wouldn't have had to "pay a little extra." Apparently, they could have done the same thing at those dealers' regular stores. It's a violation of the law, and those dealers should be prosecuted for it. But, it's not evidence of the existence of a gun show loophole.

As long as guns are being bought at some of these shows without the proper checks one would typically have to go thru in a normal retail gun transaction they will be targets of anti-gunners. You can try to twist things any way you want here, but the more these gun show guns are found in criminal acts the more they will go after these shows. Have dealers selling at these shows follow the rules and you might not have them singled out like they are. If Cabela's, Gander Mtn, Walmart or any other dealer did the same as some of the clown dealers at these shows the government would be after them also.

You and the point are this far apart.

ipscshooter is spot on. The gun show loophole is a myth. There's already laws in place to prevent the very thing you're talking about. If a rogue dealer is already breaking one law, how will another law bring him into line? It won't. It'll only further hamper legitimate dealers, while the rogue dealer will still be breaking the law. Prosecute the rogue dealers, and stop trying to bandage broken laws with more broken laws.

Once again...

You've completely missed the point. Any FFL dealer trying to sell guns at gun shows without a background check is violating the law. And, if they're doing it there, they're probably doing it at their stand-alone shop as well. Those guys can be prosecuted under existing law. No need for a new one.

I've bought at least half a dozen guns at gun shows, and had to have a background check run on each and every one of them. There are very few "individual sales' which occur at gun shows, since the fees to be an exhibitor make it unprofitable for individuals to display and sell guns at the shows. This is the target. Individual sales between non-licensed persons. And, the goal is not just gun shows, but, ALL private transactions, meaning, I would be unable to purchase a firearm as a gift for my son, without a bunch of additional federal paperwork. ANYONE who believes that that type of transaction requires federal involvement is a MORON, plain and simple.

You guys can continue to twist all you want. Whether it's private individuals (which should also be required to sell with background checks at such shows in my opinion) OR licensed dealers that are selling guns without background checks at such shows, their obviously has been a considerable amount of guns sold at these places that have turned up in crimes. This IS a fact. It sure is a whole lot easier for someone to walk into one of these shows and buy a slew of guns all at one place in comparison to having to go to various locations to get them. So you can defend your shows all you want, but they will continue to be a target of anti-gunners if violations of laws continue to occur at them. You may think more laws are not needed, but you will get MORE and even stricter ones if illegal acts continue to occur at these shows. Those are just the facts of life these days, boys, and it's unfortunate that you haven't figured this out yet. We have to take off our shoes and arrive at airports several hours before our flights (provided to you by a republican administration) just because of an incident on a particular day in 2001. The actions of a few can screw it up for everyone.
