Great leaders from the Independent Party in American history:
Please independents out there, help me out with this list. I'm drawing a blank right now for some reason.

I did not know there was an independent party. By definition, independent means no party affiliation. And since money talks in American politics, there will never be an independent person voted into office. Independent refers to those who do not align with a party. I use to call myself a Democrat back in the 80s, then a Republican until Bush. Now I cannot call myself either. Conservative Libertarian is the closest I can get to a label for myself. Other than that, I’d be pretty much an independent thinker. I will never label myself for the purpose of aligning myself with a party that I do not agree with fully. I have a mind and can use it, so to follow lock step with a party is rather sheepish IMO.

But to answer your question. Reagan.
He started as a Democrat, which he did not fit well. Then ran on the Republican ticket, which he did not fit well into either. He aligned himself with a party for two reason, monetary and political support. Other than that, he was a conservative independent.

Getting off topic. Though I can see myself aligning with this label, you can't get anywhere with that. These folks would do much better coming inside the Republican party and help through out the independents and moderates.
You guys got off topic. Who are the great "Independents" in America? Jesse the body?

Star.
Fieldmouse will never understand that independence of political party diatribe isn't a platform in and of itself.

TR is a good choice. He was his own man. He took on the robber barons and championed the national park system. Andrew Mellon came storming into the white house in response to being charged with anti-trust violations.
Mellon: "Send your man over to see my man and we can fix it."
TR: "That can't be done."

I agree, and I would wager that all do vote Republican. For no reason other than the Democrats left lean and constant move to increase government.

I can't name any but if there were any, some of them would be as rotten as the major party choices that we often have. It is like choosing the poisonous snake that you would rather be bitten by.
Both parties are completely unresponsive to the people who they work for.
You might also ask who the last great leader from the status quo. was.
