Yes, there was an effort to exclude American Samoa from the minimum wage increase. No, Pelosi wasn't behind the effort. No, it was not included in the final version of the bill. Yes, the minimum wage increase applied to American Samoa just as it applied to the states.
Yes, American Samoa's economy relies largely on the tuna canning/fishing industries. No, it doesn't make up 75% of the work force. The canning/fishing industries direct/indirectly make up 80% of all economic activity there, but tuna canning accounts for only one-third of total employment...and then it is split between two companies. That's right: Starkist isn't the only tuna company based in American Samoa; Chicken of the Sea has a canning factory there too. Thus, if Starkist was able to benefit from cheaper labor, its biggest competitor would be able to benefit, too.
No, Pelosi's husband doesn't own $7 million in Starkist stock.
