Hotel owner tells Hispanic workers to change names
Quote:
"It has nothing to do with racism. I'm not doing it for any reason other than for the satisfaction of my guests, because people calling from all over America don't know the Spanish accents or the Spanish culture or Spanish anything," Whitten says.

Martin Gutierrez, another fired employee, says he felt disrespected when he was told to use the unaccented Martin as his name. He says he told Whitten that Spanish was spoken in New Mexico before English. "He told me he didn't care what I thought because this was his business," Gutierrez says.

If Spanish is so prevalent, you would think you could find a decent Mexican food restaurant in New Mexico. I have yet to find a decent Mexican food restaurant anywhere in New Mexico.

Used to be a very good one on the outskirts of Socorro: The lady cooked on a wood burning stove. Like all good Mexican restaurants it would not have passed a food service inspection.

Lol. How true. What if funny about Mexican food; Good Mexican food will give you the runs. Also, Bad Mexican food will give you the runs. I guess that is how they get by most saftey inspectors.

Hey, if you want the thread to get active, just let me know. I'll post something like "looks like it might rain here today" and my usual "fans" will chime in about how lousy the weather is in the South, that I'm prejudiced against rain (my post will prove it), I don't know what rain really is, and someone who's never even visited here (much less lived here) will know a lot more about the weather than I ever will.

In all seriousness, the employer may well have violated one or more anti-discrimination laws at various levels of government. I don't know much about New Mexico's laws, but depending on the total number of employees at this place, Gutierrez may have a case under the Civil Rights Act.
If Whitten were smart, he would've posted employment ads seeking hires who are "familiar with and have a sound understanding of the wide variety of cultures commonly found in North America." There are ways to run your company your way, but you have to be smart about it...

That's funny
Chetry: You've been together for nine months and lived in this area for some time. Have you had any other bad experiences where you felt like people were judging you because you were together and happen to be of different races? Terence: Not so very obvious. You do have some slight undertones, especially dealing with southern states, but nothing that's been so blatantly obvious as this. But this totally caught us completely off guard. We’re just trying to live our lives.
