Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default FBI Releases Oklahoma City Bombing Tapes

For years the FBI refused to release the tapes of four security cameras that were on buildings near the Murrah building. Finally a federal judge ordered the tapes released.

Problem is that it appears that the feds edited those tapes before releasing them. There is no footage of the area before the bombing took place. The conspiracy theorists will have a field day with this one.

Quote:
OKLAHOMA CITY -- Long-secret security tapes showing the chaos immediately after the 1995 bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building are blank in the minutes before the blast and appear to have been edited, an attorney who obtained the recordings said Sunday.

"The real story is what's missing," said Jesse Trentadue, a Salt Lake City attorney who obtained the recordings through the federal Freedom of Information Act as part of an unofficial inquiry he is conducting into the April 19, 1995, bombing that killed 168 people and injured hundreds more.

...........................

The tapes turned over by the FBI came from security cameras various companies had mounted outside office buildings near the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. They are blank at points before 9:02 a.m., when a truck bomb carrying a 4,000 pound fertilizer-and-fuel-oil bomb detonated in front of the building, Trentadue said.

"Four cameras in four different locations going blank at basically the same time on the morning of April 19, 1995. There ain't no such thing as a coincidence," Trentadue said.

He said government officials claim the security cameras did not record the minutes before the bombing because "they had run out of tape" or "the tape was being replaced."

"The interesting thing is they spring back on after 9:02," he said. "The absence of footage from these crucial time intervals is evidence that there is something there that the FBI doesn't want anybody to see."

The conspiracy theorists will have a field day with anything. If you take logic and reason out of the equation, you can make a good case for anything.

If, and I say IF, they edited those tapes, I'm sure there was a good reason. Operational Security comes to mind. There are many things the general public just should not have access to. People fear this and draw stupid conclusions, but the fact is that secrecy at many different levels is a big part of how these people still live in a free America.

Yep, the feds always do everything right. Remember all the fuss over the Pentagon Papers? Those papers were "classified" because of US military and political blunders in Vietnam.

If you weren't serious that would be laughable.

Sounds like a valid reason for the conspiracy theorists to get worked up to me. Why edit something if theres nothing to hide?

OK, relax.

I'm not saying the Federal Government or it's agencies always do the right thing.

I'm just saying that sometimes, secrecy is better. I said "IF" because I couldn't view the footage and I'm not gonna make a statement about something I haven't seen.

Let's assume they did in fact edit the tapes. There's two possibilities.

1. They did it to cover up something.

2. They did it to protect something.

Now, the cover up could be a horrible thing. I'm not gonna sit here and say that it couldn't happen. But it could also be something benign that we can't comprehend because we don't know all the facts.

If they did it to protect something, then that's how it should be. People need to get over this whole "I have a right to know everything that's going on." No you don't. And shouldn't. If it's an Operational Security issue, then by showing you, they'd be showing people they don't want to see it for security reasons. I have no idea what that would be, but I'm just saying.

There are litterally thousands of things we never hear about on a monthly basis due to security issues. We only gripe about the ones we think we know about and think we have a "right" to know about.

Personally, I don't give a rat's behind if people think they have some right to know certain things. If keeping that info from me protects one of my brothers in arms, then so be it.

The OKC bombing was horrible. My heart goes out to those who lost loved ones. I hope we offed the MF'er who did it. I hope no one got away with anything there. But sometimes, you just have to take it for what it is. You don't rate the info. Neither do I. Deal with it.

Lubricious,

You're EOD according to your profile. You're telling me you think everything you learned for that type of job should be public knowledge?

Sometimes, there are things we just can't show/tell the general public. It may look bad, but it's better than something being divulged that shouldn't be in the hands of bad guys.

No, not everything but there would be nothing shown on that tape that would be sensitive information. All the info on the type of bomb he used, its fuzing and its placement can easily be fund on the web.
