Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default The worst yet to come?

I hope I'm wrong, but I'm wondering if another sharp downturn in the economy isn't in our near future. Given that we've recovered very little from the initial setback and are still very much in recession, this would be devastating.

This is just based on what I'm seeing and hearing in my neck of the woods. But after the housing market has turned around a little and we stopped the bleeding in the jobless situation for a couple of months, there has been a big uptick in mass layoffs and the housing market seems to have gone stagnant again. The fragile confidence that was being restored in a lot of folks seems to have vanished.

I hope I'm wrong, but I'm afraid this could turn out to be a long winter.

Yep, double dip recession has been predicted for a while now...I think it will happen...

Why should be expect another set back, look who's at the helm! Does anyone expect any thing positive out of this administration? If so, WHAT?

The only positive thing you can get out of this is that hopefully, when this finally all gets better, people may have learned how to better manage their money and our economy might not be dependant on mass overspending like it has been.

But for that to happen, it has to get much worse. And I think it might. Especially as we get closer to the next election. Which can't come soon enough in my opinion.

It kills me to see so many losing jobs, losing homes, and broken dreams. I've been around now 60 years and I don't remember the country being in such array, even in the Viet Nam era people were making money. I get so frustrated (and it comes out as violence in my post) because I can't do a damn thing about it!

I would think that the powers to be with the help of the osama press, will keep things pretty stable until after the 2010 elections. After that, I would hate to have much money in the stock market.

Please expand. Are you saying it's possible to manipulate the economy on the whole? And that certain people would be willing to see it crash after the elections? Why?

If I understood James correctly, I think what he's saying is that when you see a huge storm comming, it's best to stave it off till you can reasonably blame it on someone else. Especially if it's too late to actually stop it.

Many administrations have done this. Put it off till the next bunch of clowns shows up and can't do anything to stop it, then blame them for not doing so. I honestly think this is just general politics, and not exclusive to either Dems or Reps.

That makes sense. I wasn't sure what he was saying. Too late at night for me, I guess.

However, I do think that what is coming is coming (whatever that might be). If hundreds of thousands (or, heaven forfend, millions) more lose their jobs in the coming months, the press will have a hard time keeping quiet. Folks will recognize the stimulus for what it was, and the Democrats will pay dearly at the polls in 2010.

In talking to people around me, I can't find anyone who is confident that the economy is set to rebound in 4th Quarter or early 2010. Granted, I live in an area that, while split nearly 50-50 Democrat-Republican, is heavily conservative, and so most folks allow the fact of who is in the White House to taint their opinion. But just a couple of months ago, I was hearing a lot of people express confidence that we were on the verge of a rebound.

Thankfully, I think people are already starting to see the stimulus for what it really is.
