With all the distractions....its important to not lose site of the ball.
Obama, Biden, Valerie Jarrett, latinos, Black ministers, $14.5B stimulus, aid Dem candidate
While Pres Obama’s political team nudges Gov Paterson out of the NY race, they are fully engaged in getting NJ Gov. Jon Corzine re-elected. Every Corzine TV ad is screened by Obama's team. The governor’s aides give daily briefings to the WH. Mr. Obama’s pollsters have taken over for Corzine’s polling team, and WH operatives are on the ground for everything from internal strategy sessions to obscure pep rallies with Latino supporters. Valerie Jarrett, Obama's senior adviser, promoted Mr. Corzine in meetings with Democratic women and black ministers. VP Biden and a parade of cabinet secretaries are coming to the state to try to boost Mr. Corzine’s dismal poll numbers.
NJ is one of only two nationwide holding governor’s contests (VA is the other). Obama’s aides acknowledge that a loss in this deep-blue state would be interpreted as a rebuke of Mr. Obama, affecting his ability to pass major legislation and the public’s perceptions of his party’s power.
The attention has brought an added intensity to what is already an expensive, high-stakes and almost relentlessly negative battle between Mr. Corzine and his Republican challenger, Chris Christie, a former US attorney.
Mr. Corzine, a former Goldman Sachs chairman, is prepared to spend upward of $40 million to hold on to the office......... Underscoring Mr. Corzine’s shaky standing, the frontlines in the coming weeks may well be in the cities, areas any Democrat would be expected to dominate.
But the governor and his allies in the teachers’, public workers’ and trade unions are already gearing up for a get-out-the-vote effort that could see record spending and as many as 16,000 canvassers on the streets before Election Day.
