Obama's Approval Rating Drops Below 50 Percent Among Middle-Income Americans, Says Gallup Poll
Friday, September 18, 2009
By Terence P. Jeffrey, Editor-in-Chief

(CNSNews.com) - President Obama's approval rating has dropped below 50 percent among middle-income Americans, according to tracking done by the Gallup Poll during the period from Sept. 7-Sept. 13.

For a month, President Obama’s overall job approval rating has been scraping along at or just above 50%, according the Gallup tracking poll, which interviews approximately 1,000 adult Americans everyday. In the most recent three day period, the poll put his overall approval rating at 51%.

Among Americans in the middle-income brackets, however, the president's approval rating has now dropped below 50%.

The Gallup tracking poll publishes the president’s job approval rating among people in four different income categories: those earning less than $2,000 per month, those earning from $2,000-$4,999 per month, those earning from $5,000-$7,499 per month, and those earning $7,500 per month or more.

In the Gallup daily tracking polls conducted from Sept. 7-Sept. 13, only 47% of those earning $5,000 to $7,499 per month said they approve of the job that Obama is doing.

In the same period, only 49% of those earning $2,000 to $4,999 per month said they approve of the job that Obama is doing.

This is the first time Obama’s approval rating has simultaneously dropped below 50% for both of the middle-income brackets tracked by the Gallup Poll. It also represents a dramatic decline in Obama’s support among middle-income Americans from Gallup surveys conducted earlier this year. (To see the data from Gallup's tracking poll since the beginning of Obama's presidency go here and click the link as directed to download the information.)

During the week of the Inauguration in January, Obama’s approval rating was 69% among Americans earning between $5,000 and $7,499. That was the peak of his support among that group, which has since dropped 22 points, meaning almost a third of Americans in this income bracket who approved of Obama’s job performance on the day he started his job have since changed their minds.

Obama’s approval rating among American’s earning from $2,000-$4,999 was at 66% during Inauguration week and peaked at 68% during the period from March 16-March 22. It has now declined 19 points from that peak.

Obama’s support has also been declining among Americans who earn $7,500 per month or more. In the tracking polls conducted between Sept. 7 and Sept. 13, the president’s approval was 51% among this group. That was down from 53% in the immediately preceding seven-day period. However, Obama’s job approval rating did dip below 50% among people in this income bracket in the latter half of August. It was at 49% in the period from Aug. 17-23, according to Gallup, and at 46% in the period from Aug. 24-30.

Obama’s approval rating remains strongest among the lowest income Americans. Yet, it is declining even there. In Inauguration week, Obama’s approval rating was 73% among Americans earning less than $2,000 per year, and it peaked at 76% in the period of May 4-May 10. But in polling conducted between Sept. 7 and Sept. 13, the president's approval was down to 63% among Americans earning less than $2,000 per month.

Maybe Obama will be demoted by the US media from god-status to mortal man status. This happens with most new presidents -- they initially can do no wrong (the "honeymoon" period) and then the serious critiquing begins. In the case of Obama this is very good news. I don't object to him having the view points he does -- what scares the he11 out of me is that he has heretofore been able to spin his webs with no opposition in congress and no honest critical inquiry from the news media. I certainly hope that is coming to an end, but probably not entirely. Frankly, other than the healthcare debate -- which clearly didn't break Obama's way -- and the bad news of his radical czars, Obama is still the darling and beloved of the news media. And even the bad news of his radical czars didn't come from the main stream media but from FOX. What about the ACORN crash? Do you think that makes Obama look bad -- he once was a community organizer -- or do you figure that really didn't impact him whatsoever?

Excellent post, Alsatian.

As it stand now, the news in general is so distorted, I believe it actually fosters more distrust for everyone. When people cannot get what they believe is accurate information, they tend to freeze up, stop spending, and "wait and see."

Accurate, unbiased information allow one to make solid decisions on things like job outlooks and security, home purchases, car buying, and spending in general.

We need a LOT less polarization in the media than we've had lately. This is nuts.

Remember when Biden was chastised by his own party for saying Obama would be immediately challenged by foreign nations….didnt want to upset the smoke/mirrors image they had created…even compared him to kennedy…...hmmmm, NKorea Tapudong missile tests....NKorea kidnaps reporters...ect....guess Biden was right (last time I will prolly ever say that again)....truer tests of this douche's leadership ability are coming....and as he fails…I wonder how the media will spin doctor the poll numbers then?????
