Want to criticize Cash For Clunkers? There's plenty to criticize...but Big Duane has tried to pretend that the cars had a higher cash value than the amount offered under the program and that he can appraise the cars by just looking at pictures of them.
What is his "proof?" Lol...well, pictures of old cars. Yep, pictures, which he claims are somehow proof that these vehicles should have been sold outright for higher values than the trade offered by the Clunkers deal.
"Inventory is a big issue," said Jesse Toprak, vice president of industry trends at online auto-pricing site TrueCar.com.
".....most of the cars turned in for rebates were in such bad shape that only about 20% would have been re-sold."
Note that the first captioned paragraph clearly validates that the program did, in fact, spur sales.
More importantly, note as highlighted in the second quote, that the cars were in fact, primarily unmarketable junk...as opposed to all the undocumented claimes posted by Big Duane.
Toprak is vice-president of industry trends at online automobile pricing site known as TrueCar.com. He never made the wild claim that the cars were worth more than the trade in values offered or that most of them were still marketable vehicles. He also does not claim to be able to appraise a vehicle by just looking at a picture of it.
Big Duane, on the other hand, is just some guy who claims to be from somewhere in the south with no meaningful experience in the automobile business and who claims to work in the telecommunications industry.
Lol, gee, I wonder which guy knows car values best?
Bottom line: The cars were clunkers. Amazing that 700,000 people knew that, but Duane claims to be somehow smarter than all those car owners. Mind you, he has no documentation, just pictures.
Good stuff, Duane.
Still want to appraise junk cars by looking at pictures? Take my advice: Don't quit your day job.

The $3-billion clunker program provided rebates of as much as $4,500 to consumers who traded in a used car for a new, more fuel-efficient vehicle.
originally 1 billion or until November, the Govt so grossly underestimated the give away they had to emergency extend 2 billion more in tax payer dollars and still cut it way way short of the Nov time line. That silly Govt .... they sure know how to calculate things.
Quote:
Originally conceived as a way to get gas guzzlers off the road, the focus shifted to jump-starting auto sales, which have been in a slump for almost two years.
Oh, so not only did they make a complete disaster of projecting it, the whole CONCEPT BEHIND IT changed? Sweet.
Quote:
To qualify for the rebates, trade-ins have to be junked. With hundreds of thousands of vehicles taken out of circulation, there are concerns the program will add to what is already a tight used-car market.
How are either of these good things?
Quote:
Used car prices already had been rising because the sharp falloff in new-car transactions -- especially leasing -- has put a big dent in the supply of previously owned vehicles, Toprak said
Great - so the 99.% of us that paid 3 billion in tax dollars for the other 700,000 to get unto new cars also will have to pay more for a used car if we want one?
Quote:
Some were running out of qualifying vehicles, but many quit because they were worried that they wouldn't get reimbursed by the government because of paperwork problems.
oh gotta love that silly Govt !!

I don't have to try and disprove you, I just have to read the links you posted !! LOL ..... I mean C'mon you're still being slapped around here like a rag doll. Stop it - you've embarassed yourself well enough already.
I can literally do this all day long ....... where you think you know, I DO KNOW.

So what? You said they'd would never use up the original money, let alone need more. I guess you were wrong on that one too and the amount actually spent and how fast is was spent is a testament to how much it accomplished in the way of stimulating sales.
Care to answer for your comments on how it would surely fail?

You stated boldly and flatly that it would NEVER get gas guzzlers off the road and that it would be such a lousy stimulus as far as sales go that they would never use up all the money originally earmarked. Wrong again, eh, Big Duane? Care to comment?
Lol, I didn't think so. Your problem is you never spent 5 minutes studying economics...its all foreign to you. That's why you said that the money would come out of some other budget.

Nice flip flop. Originally you said that it would have only a "minimal effect, if any, on used car sales." Those were your EXACT WORDS.
As to the rest, you can bash your man, Obama, now because its popular on this board, but of course, the record shows that previously you bragged about voting for him. You stated that your only regret was that you could only vote for him once.
".....most of the cars turned in for rebates were in such bad shape that only about 20% would have been re-sold."
No comment on the above, eh, Duane?
Lol, I didn't think so.
Feeling stupid? Too embarrassed to admit you were talking out your azz?
I wonder why, old man?
You said these vehicles were wonderful! That their resale value far, far exceeded the $4500 offered for them, right? So why did you ignore that quote? I thought you were the expert here? After all, you did post pictures of actual cars didn't you? So why so quiet now?
You said they would never use all the money. First you stated clearly that the program would have minimal effects on used car sales, now you're whining about how there will be a shortage. So which is it? No answers still?
You said the cars were all worth far in excess of the values...yet you have no answer for the facts I posted on this thread. Its right there in red. Even a moron should be able to read it. I even made the font larger for you. No answer?
Maybe what Jed Clampett drove in the Beverly Hillbillies is your idea of a normal car. Lol, normal people don't think so. That's why 700,000 traded in their cars for a program that gave them a higher value...but you said they were stupid. No answers from you on that either? What's the matter, Big Duane? Feeling stupid?
Whatever, the fact remains, you cannot answer for what you've posted.
If Cash For Clunkers was such a success,,,,Why end it?
The auto industry is supposedly the manufacturing lifeblood of our country, that is so important and too big to fail. Why end CFC when it created such a big spike in auto sales.
Why,Why,Why???
I bet the government could increase sales in every industry. Just name it. Force the the tax payers to foot the bill of about an 1/8 to a 1/4 of the purchase price, and voilą,, Recession solved.

You know, "Cash for Clunkers" is a catchy slogan and probably helped the popularity of this program. Notwithstanding the success of said program, this thread has inspired me to consider the public image of other government expenditures and write some new slogans to help Uncle Sam help our fellow Americans.
Perhaps some of the other expenditures of late could benefit from this type of old fashioned, sly marketing jazz. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm?
Take last fall's Wall Street Bailout? Nahhh- too eggheadish and negative, bound to cause folks to sneer and grunt like apes. I have a better one. How 'bout,
"Billions for Bankers!"
The war on terror as a whole? War? Terror? eeek! now that's never gonna sell. But I realized most folks like a good shoot'em up movie and many also like game shows, so why not a hybrid? Call it,
"Dollars for Destruction!"
And the ever controversial Economic Stimulus Package? Stimulus Package? Wasn't that in a Viagra or Cialis info-mercial? We shant have the kids hear such vulagrity shall we?
"Trillions for Taxpayers!"
Now that's a winner everytime.
And what about Universal Healthcare? Universal? No, the Universe is way to big, just something some scientist made up anyway. Healthcare? That makes me think I'm sick, dying, or maybe living in Iraq - depressing! That'll never do. How 'bout,
"Wellness Wealth for Weverybody!"
or
"Medical Make-over With the Stars!"
Now those are some slogans we all could get behind.

A good slogan for end of life counseling for our elderly, and those who are the biggest drain on the proposed collective single payer dream of the left would be:
Caskets for Clunkers
