Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default CDC Considers Promoting 'Universal Circumcision'

Who's should be the one to decide this? Government or parents?

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,541970,00.html

Quote:
In an effort to reduce the spread of HIV, public health officials are considering the promotion of “universal circumcision” for all baby boys born in the United States.
The move comes after officials analyzed the results of several studies that show in African countries hit hard by HIV, men who were circumcised reduced their infection risk by half, the New York Times reported. However, those studies focused on heterosexual men who are at risk of getting HIV from infected female partners. The main issue in the U.S. is men who have sex with men.
Why not outlaw unmoral behavior? Why reward such unmoral behavior by putting it on equal footing with traditional marraige? No, lets promote taking a knife to a new born baby with out parental consent.

Well, making is one thing, promoting is another. I would believe its a good thing. I know after my boy was born, my wife told me if I wanted him cut, I had to be with him during the process. We were so wore out throughout the process, I said forget it, he will be ok uncut.

Once healthcare become government controled, you loose all that choice, that's the point. This is only the slippry slope and it's the worst slope any of us want to go down. The Health and Human services Secretary will become the most powerful post in the administration.

Thumbs down

Circumcision was common practice "for health reasons" until about the mid 70s, then research revealed that all it actually achieved was relieving parents of the burden of teaching proper hygiene to their little boys. Preventing STDs also falls under the banner of teaching proper hygiene, we don't need goobermint mandated pecker docking for that.

I highly doubt government can ever mandate something like this. Many people think this is a barbaric practice and want NO part of it for their child. It used to be that most (over 90%) American born boys had this procedure done. Now its about only 50%. Why? Basically because it's been proven a useless procedure and lots of ethnic groups who have immigrated to this country do not believe in having this done. Other than those who do this for religious reasons, the US was pretty much the only country under the sun who did this to their baby boys, and it started out because of our puritanical mentality where they thought that this procedure would prevent boys from choking their chickens when they came of age. You guys ought to read the history behind this in our country. It's quite interesting and stupid all at the same time.

Cool

My husband had to be circumcised at age 18 so he has had it both ways. He says circumcised is way better for a number of reasons. Any boys we have will be circumcised right after birth.

As far as this thread is concerned, it should be noted that the CDC is promoting it, not requiring it. They also promote losing weight, exercising, getting regular checkups, etc.

And it should be a parental decision. But if you talk to my husband, he'll give you a number of reasons why it's a good idea. And I could give you a couple too.

This issue has little effect on sheep

Pardon the pun but that is government cutting into my private life. Those idiots in Washington must have too much free time on their hands wondering how they can meddle in our business... Keep electing Liberals and they will soon be tell us what color uniform to wear daily.

What are they going to call this one the wiener czar?

Maybe this is much ado about nothing. It may be like the CDC promotes people getting the flu vaccine every fall or women over 60 taking calcium vitamen supplements.

With reference to the lowering the risk of HIV infection. I am sure that the best guidance on lowering the risk of HIV infection is (1) do not use hypodermic needles previously used by others, (2) don't have sex with intravenous drug users, and (3) don't have unnatural sex. I have read -- and long thought before reading this -- that the vast majority of the American public is not at risk of AIDS infection. The fact that an AIDS epidemic has NOT swept our country is confirmation of this. The days of becoming infected with aids from a simple blood transfusion are long over: we identified that risk, implemented appropriate blood tests, game over. If you have normal sex -- tab A in slot A -- with someone who is NOT an intravenous drug user your risk of contracting AIDS is trivial. No need to wear a condom (not for AIDS -- maybe to avoid pregnancy or transmission of syphillus, gonerea, herpes, or other STDs). If you are not doing the things that society tells you not to do (have gay sex and be a druggy) it just isn't an issue. Amazing how that works out that way, sort of like how it was played on day number 1, but the media and liberals and gays loudly proclaimed us to be bigots and narrow minded rednecks.

If we have some sort of penalties for unhealthful personal choices like smoking or eating red meat in the Brave New World of national healthcare, I wonder if there will be appropriate penalties for personal choices of where one places one's tab A?
