Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default Is there any legal way to save her?

A 17-year-old girl who fled to Florida after converting from Islam to Christianity will almost certainly be forced to return home to Ohio, experts say -- despite her fears that she will become the victim of an honor killing for abandoning her parents' faith.....

I would think there would be a legal way for this girl to avoid being forced to return home. It's not like she's 12. She could commit a crime and be put in jail, couldn't she?

The problem is she is still 17. I went through some hard times with my daughter when she was 17 and she wanted to leave to live with her boyfriend. After a meeting the the police they told her that she was under our care until she was 18 and if I wanted I could have her arrested as a run away. This was in Texas and 12 years ago, so who knows what the law will do.
And they say Islam is a peaceful religion!

Sad story. One would hope that her fears are the stuff of hyperbole, but based on prior incidents there would, on the surface, appear to be some justification for what she says.

true. but on the other hand (hey, it's friday) i wonder how any of us would feel if our 17 year old child ran off across state lines to meet an adult preacher he or she met through facebook?

Cool

She has apparently done what my husband would have recommended, that is, run away from home. That brings her case to the attention of the court and might help keep her family at bay.

One thing we don't know is whether the father actually feels honor bound to do what she fears. Not all Muslims, like Christians, are so devout as to always strictly adhere to the tenets of their religion.

Yep, not all sheep are sheepish

See "Emancipated Minor." But I have not idea if she qualifies.

It says in the article that Ohio has no emancipation statute. Florida does, but requires parental consent.

Michigan statute says you are emancipated by marriage, joining the military, or by court order.

Wonder how it would have gone had she run away to Michigan

Sad story, but she will die. She will be sent over seas so that her head can be cut off. It breaks my heart. And what really makes me mad, we can't speak out about Muslims because we will be coined intolerant. I just wish she was 18 so she could legally run away.

Boysda, I doubt any of us are prepared to have our 17-year-old's head lopped off because she shuns our religion.

Who knows whether her parents subscribe to the Islamic tradition of honor killings, and so legally, the court will do the only thing it can do, and that's return the girl to her family. I would like to think that she's being a typical teenager: Disgruntled with her parents' strict rules, wanting out from under their thumb, and so she makes stuff up. But given the history with this religion, I can't help but sympathize with her.
