Sometimes something pops up to remind us that the society has a way to go.
"(CN) - A group of black workers at a South Carolina steel plant won class certification in a lawsuit claiming that "monkey noises" were broadcast over the speakers to communicate with black workers. They also claimed they were unfairly denied promotions at Nucor Corp.
The 4th Circuit ruled that the workers "certainly presented compelling direct evidence of discrimination, such as denials of promotions when more junior white employees were granted promotions, denial of the ability to cross-train during regular shifts like their white counterparts, and a statement by a white supervisor that he would never promote a black employee."
That evidence alone, the Virginia-based appellate panel ruled, "establishes common claims of discrimination worthy of class certification."
I have heard a true story about a group of employees of another ethnic background hired for specific labor work only in the steel industry through a government co-op program, claiming similar issues of discrimination. Not a single one of them had the qualifications to hold up an umbrella in the rain let alone train for it while the sun was shining. Guess they felt entitled to try and sue because they could.
Unfortunately you can't put discrimination in the past as long as you still have racial quota's or AKA diversity quotas.

X2, I've lost a job opportunity to "Affirmative Action". They hired the totally unqualified black kid who was applying that day, despite my much better resume. As they lead him away to begin indoc, while I stood there gaping in disbelief, I turned to the interviewer, who looked furtively around before whispering "We were short one, sorry." A knife cuts in both directions, and always divides.

I feel your pain, Kevin... Believe me.
You guys DON'T want me to go off again regarding my current job (graveyard shift) now, do you? The things I have overheard, the "jokingly" reverse-racial conversations, etc... Man, I should write a book!!!

I think affirmative action was probably a good thing and necessary at one time. It served to get people accustomed to seeing minorities in places they had never been seen before. But I think the practice has outlived its usefulness.
But racist thinking is still with us and is never going to go away. It's always going to be necessary to make sure it doesn't become the norm.

DLG, read the book "Black Rednecks and White Liberals". You may find yourself convinced otherwise. Stats show affirmative action made problems worst not better.

Your right there! It's never going to go away. I think as long as we do have things like affirmative action, exclusive organizations, including things like Black American Month, Miss Black USA, BET T.V. FUBU...talk of Reformation..
Imagine what would happen if we had a White America Month, Miss White USA, White clothes for whites only.. (Oops we do - Wal Mart )...
Reverse discrimination is alive well in the United States and is only going to get worse!
Thumbing your nose in the face of those trying to put things behind only perpetuates the problem.
