What's really evident is how everyone seems to have the same basic outlook on all of this. Help those who need it and try to control the freeloaders! The problem is that we automatically assume that because someone is buying a birthday cake and ice with food stamps, they are a freeloader taking advantage of the system. I maintain that we should not label or make assumptions about these people without knowing their circumstance. What is wrong with that premise?
The government being the one to control it. Charities can and will say no to freeloaders. Government workers say yes because it equals job security.

A thumb size island of rice with a nice slice of raw Blue Fin Tuna on top will run you $10 a pop in Miami. I'll take 6 please.

I'm going to bet it's the tuna that's responsible for the price.
I do the same thing with salmon. Lots of times, I'll make it in the shape of a fish and cut little fins and tail from spinach or celery leaves. It's tedious but the girls get a huge kick out of it.

I agree with all of you about buying things for a party. Right now my family is getting foodstamps and I hate it. But I have to be able to feed my kid and times are really tough and so we got help. I will not by my son's birthday cake from the bakery with our foodstamp card. If we can't afford a really nice cake for him than I bake and decorate one myself. Last year my sister was kind enough to buy his cake as he really wanted a spongebob one. I don't agree however about lamb and mutton, while we don't eat either one of those other people do. Why shouldn't they be able to buy whatever kind of meat they want as long as it last them the whole month? Also I don't like how people keep saying its their money, its our money as well. My husband is working I however am unable to work due to medical issues. Anyway he works long hours and he works hard, he just doesn't make enough. He is also going to school so he can better our situation, I am going online for business admin. I don't know how long I will be unable to work. My point is that we are not just sitting on our butts doing nothing at all, my husband pays taxes so its our money as well. I know there are people out there abusing the system but just know not everybody is. As soon as we are able to we plan on getting rid of the foodstamps as this is no way to live.
I knew that would strike a nerve. The point is exactly that! If you do not know someone's circumstances, why would you judge them without knowing the facts of the situation? This is a free country? Or so they say it is! If someone receives a subsidy, it's theirs! Back off! And have you ever driven over the speed limit? I helped pay for the roads with my tax dollars. SLOW DOWN! The debate could go on forever. Geez!
If you're so poor you need to subsist on government largesse, then your kid don't GET a birthday cake. It's just that simple. You get what you can afford which means whatever the government will pay for. So if you don't like it, get a job like everybody else. Or collect cans....just a few cans will get Baby Zippy a cake.....

There's lots to agree with here. Not everyone taking assistance is a freeloader....true.....the fact that you take the assistance but can't wait to get off of it puts you in the minority of those accepting the assistance insofar as you do not intend to make a career out of it...and don't want your kids scamming the system for the same reason.....good good..... You are doing your utmost to get out of your situation...again, you are in the minority. Millions of recipients are doing their utmost to get MORE assistance, and see no end in sight to the gravy-train.
Look.... I don't think anybody will assert there are no people who really DO need the assistance. The problem is the institutionalization of the assistance as a generational rite of passage handed down from mother to bastard daughter. The purchase of non-essential food items....that flies in the faces of the people who pay for this assistance as an abuse of the program...a waste of money they worked for, and the recipients did not. So, assistance to the poor can come from the church or other private philanthropic groups...even the kind sister who will dip into her well-lined pocket to give a kid a birthday party he'd not otherwise get. But when you see people crying poverty wearing designer clothes and shoes, and carrying smart phones, talking about TV shows on cable in their air-conditioned subsidized houses....that really chafes. So my friend, you suffer the slings and arrows meant for those who abuse the system and who have no intention of ever leaving the rolls of beneificiaries for government largesse.

If your truly in need of it, I don't have a problem with it.
Unfortunately many on such assistance cry poverty while they have +$300 game consoles, hundreds more in video games, $100 sneakers, some may be driving a +$30k cars , crack down on those people, the fraud and abuse and there will be more for those truly in need.
I can't knock public assistance in general because pretty much everyone here knows that we received public assistance when I was a baby. We got subsidized housing, food stamps, and subsidized day care while Mama worked. She got a job as a waitress which provided not quite enough. When she turned 18, she went to work in a bar. Much better tips enabled us to get off the public assistance.
It's not really hard to get a job as a waitress. The turnover is fairly high but you have to be able to be on your feet the whole shift and also move relatively quickly.
Public assistance should be for people who need help getting on their feet. It should not be a career choice.

Why not ice? Many of the cards have been used for lap dances at strip clubs. ATM machines in strip clubs have been used to get the allowed cash on the cards.
Ive seen time and time again booze getting purchased with money obtained by these cards. A person pulls a cart of chips and dip up the the counter, with a cart full of booze behind that. They pay for the chips and dip on the card and get allowed cash. Then hand the cash back over to pay for the booze in the other cart.
