(CNSNews.com) - Americans who consider themselves conservatives now outnumber Americans who consider themselves liberal by almost two to one, according to a new poll by the Washington Post and ABC News.
In the poll of 1,001 adults conducted between July 15-18, respondents were asked: “Would you say your views on most political matters are liberal, moderate, or conservative?”
Thirty-eight percent said they were conservative, while only 20% said they were liberal. Thirty-nine percent, meanwhile, said they were moderate.
The percentage of self-described conservatives has increased since President Barack Obama was inaugurated in January and the percentage of self-described liberals has diminished. A Washington Post poll conducted in mid-January, shortly before the inauguration, showed 32% saying they were conservative, 24% saying they were liberal and 42% saying they were moderates.

Good going Barry, you are the hope of the G.O.P.
Better not let Phil see this, we had knock down dragouts over this last fall, when Phil proclaimed that conservative ideology was dead forever.

The conservatives have always been the majority. However they are not an easy group to get motivated. If they had the drive and ambition that the progressives have this would be a non issue. Id say the main reason for that is that most conservatives are busy with an actual job but we MUST find time to be heard.
Something else to remember is that its possible that the next year before elections will screw this country up so bad that we cant repair it. Cap and Trade and Universal Healthcare will not and probably cant be repealed if they pass into law.
You nailed it right on the head. It was the independents!
Now they feel really stupid!
Independents never feel stupid. They will always claim they voted for whats best for the country.

So is this evidence that conservatives have been successful in stigmatizing the word 'liberal'? Otherwise, what difference does the poll make?
There was a big poll taken in Nov, '08 and, believe me, conservatives did not come out on top.
Did anyone look at that poll and see the president getting high marks for job performance and that most folks thought Sotomayor should be seated? I guess folks jumped over those results on the top of the list.

Well, lets look at the facts. First off, it was darn close if you look at the numbers. Second, your "dream" won with an unpopular war looming, along with a sick economy going up against a very old man, and still barely got the job done. So it wasn't quite the runaway you try to make it out to be. He better show the country something in the next few years, or he is going to have his hands full in 3 years. Other than wasteing our taxpayers money on 2 dollar/lb ham, and giving away money to a failed auto corp.
