What's the deal here? Supposedly, one of the UN sanctions is that ships suspected of carrying nuclear components can be checked. Are we, once again, going to show how utterly toothless and pathetic the US and UN are on enforcing their own sanctions? I don't agree with, but can understand our POTUS being a coward POS going around apologizing and bowing to other leaders, trying to get everyone to join hands and sing kumbuya. But why even fake resistance by being disappointed and enacting sanctions that have no backing? Just admit we have no intention of doing anything about North Korea and Iran's nuclear ambitions, and be done with it. At least that's being honest!
A draft resolution sent to the seven governments on Friday would curtail North Korea's financial dealings with the outside world, freeze assets of additional companies, expand an arms embargo, and authorize searches of ships on the high seas suspected of carrying arms and banned weapons to the North if the country whose flag the vessel is flying gives consent. According to that draft, if the country doesn't give its consent "” a virtual certainty if the ship is North Korean "” the country shall "direct the vessel to proceed to an appropriate and convenient port for the required inspection by the local authorities." Several diplomats questioned whether this would actually lead to inspections.
The country conducting any such boarding and inspection would risk reprisals from NK, probably loss of trade status and monies, and might face a military response as well. Not many nations want an international incident interfering with trade, so the prospect of an inspection would be very low. The vessel in question is of NK registry, they won't give consent.

How worried are you that the US might lose trade status and monies from NK or that we might face a "military response"?
To me this is a true test of Obama's nads. If he does nothing, he will simply be showing the world what a toothless, worthless POS he is on national security. So far his apology tour has garnered us nothing but disrespect and uncooperation.

He has none, he's the UN's bitsch in every sense of the word. Who did you think annointed him? He's the POTUS they've always wanted, one who isn't afraid to sell out his own country.

Were it up to me, I'd first make absolutely certain that Kim Jong Ill was home, then flatten Pyong Yang with afive hour shower of Daisy Cutters.
D'oh! I meant I'd have the Navy board that pesky vessel and subject it to a rigorous inspection. Yeah, that's the ticket...

Why even have sanctions or resolutions if they aren't enforced?
the sanctions themselves, as enacted by the UN, are toothless. the ship can only be boarded with the permission of the country under whose flag the ship is registered. so.....to board a north korean ship, we'd actually need north korea's permission. brilliant, huh?
Tell me what the US is supposed to do. For too long the US has been the lord protector of the world. That policy has cost us tens of trillions of dollars and helped to put our country in the fixwe are innow. Pipsqueak is a very unstable idiot in an unstable country. The scumbag just might hit ***an or South Korea with a nuke if the US boards that ship.
If that ship had been carryingnuclear components the US knew about those nuclear componentssoon afterthat ship left the dock inNorth Korea. That US technology is 35 years old.
Part of the reason we are where we are with North Korea is the inconsistent policy toward that country. Bush whined about Clinton feeding and fueling the North Korean army. ThenBush turned around and did the exact same thing. In aHail Marythrow at a Nobel Peace Prize;last October Bush took North Korea off the terror watch list.
Apparently, the UN itself approved boarding such ships if suspected of carrying nuclear components. I think the UN and US look weak if they put sanctions out there that they are unwilling to enforce. I agree we can't police the world. God knows we can't afford our socialism/fascism without disabling NK or Iran, but strong countries back their words with power if needed. Don't put words out there that only end up making us look like idiots for not backing! It's better to just say nothing and not even shadow the ship than to show that we know it is suspected of having nuclear components, but do nothing but escort it toits chosen destination!
