according to a July 4, 2003 Reuters headline. The article quotes an L.A. lifeguard who asserts that in spite of the ubiquitous fear of shark attacks in this country, 'more people are killed in the United States each year by vending machines,' which smacks of an urban legend but probably isn't.
Heck, we can't let silly things like facts, honesty, and truth get in the way! Who cares that vending machines (actually, according to the stats at the site in the link, SODA machines, which leaves gobs of other vending machines out of the mix) are more deadly to humans that shark attacks. If you report that on the news, ratings will fall through the floor! We need blood, and guts, and sensationalism.......we need "experts" to say how vicious they are, and how they are inbred and secretly lust for human flesh and some species are growing legs so they can rush the beaches to attack humans and.................
Ooops....sorry about that. I was pretending to be a news anchor........or maybe I was pretending to be a wannabe archbishop of huntingnet?

LBR, You know that actual concrete facts are nothing to be concerned with. Car accidents that behead innocent children are just accidents and nothing to be concerned with.
I propose a complete ban on sharks so that we may make the beaches a safer place for every one.

I propose a ban on sharks that drive cars and own pit bulldogs. Of course it won't change a thing, but it makes for a great soundbite. Sounds like HCI "logic" again, doesn't it?

I'm betting that most of the vending machine deaths involved the practice of 'tipping' the machines to get free stuff out of them. Its not a normal activity involving vending machines, it would be the equivalent to getting killed while having a horse roast tied to your chest in a swarm of tiger sharks.
