In fear, Police shoots and kills 11-year-old Miniature Daschund
By admin on June 14th, 2009

DANVILLE, Va. - Eleven years ago, Tawaiin Harper spent months looking for a pet that would grow up with his children, Nicole and Carlos.
Tawaiin said he didn"™t want anything that would get too big and found a match in a miniature dachshund. The family named the dog Killer despite its small size.
"œHe was a part of the family,"œ Tawaiin said. "œI come home every day and wait for that greeting."œ
According to a news release from Danville Police Chief Philip Broadfoot, an officer shot and killed the dachshund Monday night while serving two outstanding warrants to a neighbor in the 100 block of Berman Drive.
As the officer returned to his car, "œhe was surprised by a growling dog running through the yard directly at him from the rear, leaving him with just seconds to consider his options,"œ according to the news release. The options for the officer in that type of situation include running to the squad car; distracting the dog; or using pepper spray, a baton or firearm. The dog lunged at the police officer and attacked him as the officer fired one shot that hit and killed the dog, Broadfoot said.
An investigation by the Danville Police Department found that the dog displayed aggressive tendencies before other people.
"œShooting a dog which is actively presenting a threat to an officer is within the department"™s policy,"œ according to the release.
Lt. Mike Mondul, public information officer for the Danville Police Department, said that the lag between the incident and acknowledgement from the department was due to an administrative decision.
"œThe decision was made by department administration that the chief would address it on Thursday,"œ Mondul said.
Carlos, 14, was upstairs when he heard the gunshot.
"œI saw my mom, and she started to cry,"œ Carlos said.
The children came downstairs, he said, and their mother told them that a police officer shot Killer.
Tawaiin drove home from work after getting a call from Carlos about the shooting.
"œWhen I got there, the dog was laying with his guts hanging out,"œ Tawaiin said.
The officer leaned against his patrol car, smoking a cigarette, and Tawaiin walked over to talk to him. He said the officer told him that he had to shoot the dog because he was barking at him.
Tawaiin asked for his badge number and name, but the officer refused to give it to him and said his supervisor was on the way.
His supervisor arrived and couldn"™t believe what happened, Tawaiin said.
"œ(The lieutenant) was very, very remorseful,"œ Tawaiin said. "œHe kept apologizing. And he said I know apologizing can"™t bring the dog back, but I just don"™t know what to say."œ
The dog was a member of the family, Tawaiin said. Nicole was 4 and Carlos was 3 when the family welcomed the new addition.
"œHe was like a brother to me,"œ Carlos said.
Killer greeted Tawaiin every time he came home. Whenever a car pulled into the cul-de-sac, Killer barked to let everyone know that someone new was there.
"œHe was the security guard around here,"œ Tawaiin said.
Neighbors said Killer was a sweet, mild-mannered dog.
"œHe just kind of walked up and down the neighborhood and didn"™t bother anybody,"œ said Jenine Edmunds, who lives on the cul-de-sac. "œHe was just a little house dog."œ
Friends and neighbors have asked the Harpers if they will get a new dog.
"œYou can"™t replace Killer. He"™s one of a kind.
"œI"™m still trying to soak it in because the dog had been with us so long. He was a family member. They took a family member away."œ

That's sad, I have a mini dach myself, but the officer was justified.
Dog owners are always responsible for the actions of their pets, if they had restrained the dog while the cop was there they'd still have it. One must also consider the temperment of the breed too, the dachshund was originally a hunting breed, the smallest of the European hound breeds. The larger ones were where they derived the name, in German "dachshund' means "badger dog". They were bred to go down badger holes, grab the meanest animal on earth by the snout, and drag it out to be killed. My mini probably weighs ten pounds, and is terrified of thunderstorms, but move toward me in a way that he doesn't like and he'll be on you in a flash.

I thought I was the only fool ever attacked by a wiener dog. Get this, his name was WIMPY. He tore the crap out of my heel / achiles tendon as I was walking away from him. LOL.

I've seen standard dachs that weighed upwards of 30-40 lbs, so even an 18 lber is small by comparison, though large for a mini. Most of the standard dachs I've encountered were snake mean and would bite you if given the chance. One of the many German names for dachs is "Dachs Krieger"(Badger Warrior), and it's not hard to imagine why if you've ever owned one.

You're not the only one... My wife had to have a skin graft on her finger due to a dachshund attack.

Why are we even worried about this. You guys do know that, statistically, the officer was more likely to be injured by a vending machine, garden hose, or his daughters Easy Bake oven....
