Default Limiting Powers of Game Wardens

This topic has come up on a number of occasions, so I found this story interesting.

Sounds like a good law to me. I see no reason for game wardens to have more power than any other law enforcement officer.

While I have not personally been affected by the current law to great extent, I have witnessed others being harassed by power tripping deputies. I wholeheartedly agree that they need to be put in check. I did have one female don't know if she was a warden or deputy stop me as I was coming out of the woods and asked if it was me shooting that she heard. I said no and she still wanted to see an empty. I again told her that it wasn't me shooting so how can I have an empty. She had the ticket written already just waiting to fill in the personal info. Instead of just accepting my explanation and leaving she wanted to inspect my rifle, I removed the bolt and handed it to her at which point she exclaimed that it has been recently fired. At this point I beginning to get peeved and asked her if she was coming in from out of state and ensuring that the gun was still zeroed the day before the season would she clean her gun to go out the next day. I guess the common sense overwhelmed her and she didn't say another word and got in the truck and left.

Game wardens have way too much power in my state as well. Funny story- my BIL, who is a Sherrif's deputy put one in his place a few years ago.

A woman had called the sherrif's department at 3:00AM to report that she hit a deer with her car. My BIL showed up to see a line of cars on the side of the road- the woman had hit a 14 pointer! He asked her if she wanter it, she said no, so he asked a friend of his who was on the scene if he wanted it, and he did, so my BIL tagged it and gave it to him. The next day, the local warden was in county building bitching at my BIL that the deerwas state property and that he was deeply in the wrong for allowing someone to claim it. My BIL told him "good, whenever someone hits a doe at 3:00Am, I'm calling your house to tell you to get your property off my road."

I wish something like this would happen here in Ca...they are just like regular cops or State Troopers here...they do just about anything they want...the thing about California at one time we had 285 wardens for the entire state, which was to lowest warden count in the US per population and sq miles....today we only have 187 for the entire State...and dropping, the State of California is quickly running out of money...

I applied for them, but then I pulled my app since they don't make any money...Could be an enjoyable and rewarding job though...

Sounds like the only thing this bill is going to do is require that wardens actually have probable cause before they can stop and/or search a hunter. I don't know why that isn't already a requirement.

FWIW, I understand why the law gives wardens additional authority to search property for game violations but still believe they should have to follow the 6th amendment like all other cops. I haven't had any bad experiences with CA wardens and the ones I've encountered professionally or while hunting or abalone diving have all been professional and courteous. Jeepkid is right in that CA wardens are qway underpaid. However, they do get to know all the good hunting spots and also get a lot of private property access rights for hunting & fishing.

Conservation Officers in Indiana have more authority than State Police, I see them in the paper all the time making non-game related investigations and arrests, usually drug related offenses. Most do exemplary work and merit full respect, but some do abuse it as well. Game Wardens and Bounty Hunters are two groups that probably need their leashes shortened a bit.
