Geithner garners guffaws
I see where US Treasurey Secretary Tim "forgot to pay my SS taxes" Geithner addressed a group of Chinese students at Beijing University. Geithner, referring to Chinese investments US bonds, said that Chinese financial assets are very safe. This remark brought a lot of laughter from the audience. I wonder why? Is it because this patently self-serving statement was deemed not worth the air consumed in speaking it? Because this statement in the context of other US government remarks on the economy and financial markets was deemed highly untrustworthy? Or was it aninartfultranslation that drew the laughter?
Does anyone have any comments on how foreign creditors may view the US Treasury Secretary who is widely understood to be a tax cheat? Sure, Obama's slight of hand in minimizing this foible of Geithner satisfied NPR, CBS, and CNN . . . but maybe our largest creditor, China, doesn't like the moral cut of cloth from which the US Treasury Secretary is made?
