Default Talk is Cheap

Talk is Cheap. The appointment of US Supreme Court justices is serious business. You ought to send an email immediately to your US Senator urging them to vote AGAINST the appointment of Judge Sotomayor. You can determine the contact information of your US Senator by doing a search on the phrase "US Senator <your state>." For example, "US Senator Texas" will bring up contact information for Senator Hutchison and Senator Cornyn.

My objections to Judge Sotomayor are (1) her denial of the second amendment, (2) her avowed intention to make her judgments contingent on her gender and on her ethnic origins, and (3) her announcement that she will be an activist judge, setting policy from the bench, rather than dispassionately interpreting the law drafted by the legislative branch. Any one of these points is enough to exclude a candidate for promotion to US Supreme Court Justice; the combination in one candidate of all three makes the case for rejection all the stronger.

With reference to the second amendment, which ought to be of particular concern to all of us actively posting on this board, Judge Sotomayor has publically promulgated her opinion that the second amendment is not directed to an individual right but instead to a collective right, notwithstanding the prominent position of the second amendment in second position in the bill of rights which is clearly directed to protecting individual rights of citizens. Further, Judge Sotomayor has said that she would exclude the second amendment from the doctrine of incorporation, whereby the obligations that the bill of rights places upon the US government are extended to the states.

This is not a Democrat versus Republican thing. Obama can nominate plenty of other qualified candidates to the US Supreme Court. He can find another equally qualified woman candidate. He can find another equally qualified latino/latina candidate. You can still continue to support Obama -- if that is your inclination -- without supporting this particular nominee.

Write your senators today. Enough grousing in this forum.

Will call the offices of my senators today. OK senator Inhofe voted againstSotomayor's nomination to the appeals court. Me thinks that Inhofe and Coburn can be counted on to vote against her.

Is she the first liberal ever put up for nomination? No. 4 of the 9 current justices don't have the same interpretation of the 2nd amendment as you guys do either. Unless some more serious dirt is dug up on her I can't see her not getting voted in with a substantial democratic majority in the Senate.

Four of them are idiots who don't deserve to be there. If you can't read plain English, and interpret the writings consistently with the legislative histories, then you shouldn't have graduated from law school, let alone be appointed to the SCOTUS.

That is your opinion. We all know that Obama got elected into office by folks who knew fully well that he might be nominating someone to the court soon. It obviously didn't bother them that his choice would most likely be a liberal who doesn't exactly see the 2nd amendment the same way you do. So there might be 4 idiots on the court currently, but the bigger question is who is more of an idiot, people who think like you or those who think like Obama? Right now it looks like the Obama idiots outnumber yours so it's their turn to put in their chosen idiot.

The majority of folks who voted for Obama are idiots. Plain and simple... None of them voted for him based on who he might appoint to the Supreme Court. I doubt that many of them were capable of that depth of thought. The press led them by their little nose rings to the conclusion "Bush baaaaaad" "McCain is Bush II, so he's baaaaaad too" "I'm gonna vote for Obaaaaaamaaaaa for change and hope". And, that's as deep as it went. Bunch of stupid sheep.

I agree that unless they dig up some serious dirt this is a non-issue given the Democratic majority. Word is that the Republicans won't fight it too hard for fear of ticking off the same Hispanics who didn't vote for McCain. go figure. So, i think that she will get a moderate amount of grilling and then the Reps will rollover and take it in order to continue their effort of putting a new face on the party and not being meanies to try to attract votes from folks who will never vote for them anyway.[:-]

Bush did get a substantial amount of hispanic votes when he ran so the republicans have been able to get some votes from them. If republicans continue to represent themselves as only the party of white conservatives, they surely will not get anymore hispanic votes, even less black votes and probably few asian votes. If they don't realize that this country is more multi-ethnic than it ever was, they will NOT win nationally with only the white votes. We should not forget that the white vote is far from being 100% on the republican side either. If the republicans think they will grill Sotomayor like there is no tomorrow the media will only make them look even more like a lynch mob of good ole boys. This thread is titled "Talk is cheap", the republicans need to understand that their talk will be made to look pretty cheap if they are not careful.

Where on Earth do you get the impression that "republicans continue to represent themselves as only the party of white conservatives"??? Ridiculous. That's how the Leftist media wants to portray it. Only shallow left thinkers actually believe that crap. Who was it that shot down the Miguel Estrada nomination as a Federal judge? Why? Because he was Hispanic, with a "compelling life story" and on track for an eventual Supreme Court nod! The lefties didn't want Republicans nominating the first Hispanic to the SCOTUS. Why did the Left not rave about Alberto Gonzalez "compelling life story" the way the idiot liberal press is doing? Wasn't Colin Powell the first black named as Secretary of State? Who did that? Why does the left get to grill Republican nominated minority appointees "with impunity" (i.e Clarence Thomas) but Republicans are not allowed to question the nominees of the socialists?
