"The understanding was that the individual was of the weight where it was decided by medical authorities that he needed treatment that was not being provided for by his mother," Armstrong said. [/b]

Unintended consequences and God have one thing in common: Liberals don’t believe in either of them.
The mother is being held in a detention center and will be extradited to South Carolina on an outstanding warrant
That said, the Village is getting to the point where it trumps all parental rights - be very afraid of what ya'll wish for because the Village can come calling on your doorstep at anytime for any reason they think is valid
I watched a little ofDr. Phil or Oprah, or someone like that who did a show on obese kids. They took the viewer thru the daily diet of some of them. We are talking something like a dozen eggs, pound or two of bacon, and about a dozen pieces of heavily buttered toast just to start off the day. Then the kids sits on their ass doing nothing until lunch time when it really starts to get ugly. Then theparents are mystified when the kids get juvenile diabetes and end up getting their foot amputated of they die of stroke before they are old enough to vote. Sheeridiocy and one of many examples where parents are too stupid to do their job and so somebody else has to do it for them.

Yep, it certainly seems to trump a Mother's right to let her son get up 550 pounds, which is a major health risk by any standard you want to use.
I agree that this particular incident is a neglectful one. But we ARE on a slippery slope; in NYC, all that's needed
is a call from your neighbor to CPS stating you're beating your kids and they come down and take them away. Then
it's up to you to PROVE you're not beating them so you can get them back. So, if your neighbor's barbecue makes
too much smoke, or you park in his driveway, or you play your radio too loud, then he might make an anonymous call (yes...they don't have to identify themselves) and have your kids taken away just for the pure vengeful pleasure of watching you twist your guts out over it. Don't want the pendulum to swing too far in either direction, I'd say, on this issue.
The problem is that, as you demonstrated, the pendulum has already swung. About all we can do at this point is try tomake sure that in instances like this, the real losers parents get held to account as well.
