I cant believe the balls some people have. The wind turbine site Im on has a lot of towers, couple hundred anyway.Someones been going around cutting the grounds {copper wire} off the backs of the generators to sell for scrap. These are functioning towers, electricity running through the generators and all.Apparently theres 3 ground wires, even grouded they can hold a charge for quite some time, the thief figured out if he only cuts 2 out of 3 they wont get electrocuted.Theyre driving thier truck right up to the tower and doing it, sometimes the drives are right next to peoples houses.Best one was a tower theyd taken off line one morning a few months ago, out of commision for one day and that night someone climbed it and cut the main line from near the top and hauled it off.
I cant decide if these guys are incredibly brave or incredibly stupid, one of these days theyll get greedy and clip the wrong wire and itll kill em.Unless of course its an inside job and a employee doing it in which case theyll get caught eventually.[:@]
One of these days some idiot will get electrocuted. Then his relatives will sue the power company. [:@]
Was stationed in southern MD in the 60s. There was an abandoned power line about 4 miles long that went to a closed amusement park. Somescrappers went out there and cut down a lot of wire before three of them go into 2,200 volts and were killed dead. A wire from another power line was touching the wire that they grabbed onto.

Yeah...someday their luck will run out...and you will find them toasted.

I suspect an inside job, someone who was involved in building the towers, or maintaining them. I don't think that knowledge of which two of the three wires you cut is something you "figure out" by trial and error...
I guy got electrocuted in Denver last year while stealing wireing from inside an un-used warehouse. Got what he had comin', and I hope these thieves get the same.

The thieves hit several substations in the area around here last summer and managed to steal the groundwires and put around 10000 people out of service. I figured that would stop with scrap metal going down.
I while back at the park done the road from my house, the little league teams showed up to play there Sat. games and all the dang bleacher seats and footrests were stolen. Solid Aluminum about 12 feet long. The morons showed up at the recycle center about a week later with a truckload of bleacher seats and the cops came a arrested them.
Another one that I thought was hilarious. We were doing some work a a big company that makes printing plates for newspapers, magazines, etc. These are made out of aluminum and the bulk material they use comes in these huge rolls of aluminum sheeting, about 4 feet wide by 6 feet tall. A semi trailer can haul only 2 at a time because of weight. One of the haulers trucks broke down and was on the side of the road overnight. When they came back the next morning to fix the truck, there was a pickup backed up to the trailer with one of the rolls in the bed of the truck. They unchocked the roll and rolled it into the bed of the truck and when it hit the pickup bed it smashed it flat to the ground like crushing a soda can.
