Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default RNC's Steele Calls GOP Base "Bigoted"

Maybe this Steele guy works for the Obama white house.

http://thinkprogress.org/2009/05/09/steele-romney-mormon/

Quote:
Steele insisted, however, that Romney couldn"™t have won because the GOP base "śrejected Mitt because it had issues with Mormonism"ť:
[blockquote]STEELE: Yeah, but let me ask you. Ok, Jay, I"™m there with you. But remember, it was the base that rejected Mitt because of his switch on pro-life, from pro-choice to pro-life. It was the base that rejected Mitt because it had issues with Mormonism. It was the base that rejected Mitch, Mitt, because they thought he was back and forth and waffling on those very economic issues you"™re talking about. So, I mean, I hear what you"™re saying, but before we even got to a primary vote, the base had made very clear they had issues with Mitt because if they didn"™t, he would have defeated John McCain in those primaries in which he lost.

I am not going to condemn Steel yet but IMO he is the last person who might ever lead the GOP back to the right path, so to speak. He is probably more liberal than even McCain was. Big mistake in my book. He might be a asset to the party in some position but certainly not a it's leader.

My first impression of Romney was that he reminded me of Snydely Whiplash.. Sorry about the spelling of this famous Canadian bad guy. Canuk can correct this.

Normally, when one uses quotation marks, it means that you are quoting his actual words. I don't see anything in the article where Steele used the word "bigoted."

Steele may not be so far wrong with his comments. I do think there was a certain faction of the GOP base that rejected Romney because he was a Mormon. That doesn't make them bigoted; it just means they were uncomfortable with his religious beliefs. The focus for Republicans in '08 should've been the economy and a return to fiscal responsibility, and if you look at the GOP field, there was nobody whose credentials came even close to Romney's on those issues. Yet a lot of Republicans didn't trust him. And you heard comments like "he reminds me of a used car salesman" or "a snake-oil salesman." Those seemed like pretty ill-founded comments, and when you pressed people on them, they'd say "I dunno . . . it must be his hair." It wasn't his hair. John McCain was bald and nobody said he looked like a used car salesman. Mike Huckabee had a comb-over and no one said that about him. I'd submit to you that there was an underlying, maybe almost subconscious, distrust of Romney because of his religion. And I think you have to read awfully far into what Steele said to come up with the word bigoted.

But, with that said, choosing Steele to lead them was a huge mistake by Republicans. The GOP needs someone who can unite them. Steele isn't that someone.
