Miss California Sparks Furor With Gay Marriage Comments on Miss USA Telecast Monday , April 20, 2009
get_a(300,250,"frame1"); Miss North Carolina Kristen Dalton was crowned Miss USA on Sunday, but the big story to come out of the normally politics-free telecast was Miss California's comments regarding gay marriage.
When asked by judge Perez Hilton, an openly gay gossip blogger, whether she believed in gay marriage, Miss California, Carrie Prejean, said "We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite. And you know what, I think in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that's how I was raised."
Keith Lewis, who runs the Miss California competition, tells FOXNews.com that he was "saddened" by Prejean's statement.
"As co-director of the Miss California USA, I am personally saddened and hurt that Miss California believes marriage rights belong only to a man and a woman," said Lewis in a statement. "I believe all religions should be able to ordain what unions they see fit. I do not believe our government should be able to discriminate against anyone and religious beliefs have no politics in the Miss California family."
Co-director Shanna Moakler told FOXNews.com that she fully supported Lewis' statement.
Miss California's answer sparked a shouting match in the lobby after the show. "It's ugly," said Scott Ihrig, a gay man, who attended the pageant with his partner. "I think it's ridiculous that she got first runner-up. That is not the value of 95 percent of the people in this audience. Look around this audience and tell me how many gay men there are."
Charmaine Koonce, the mother of Miss New Mexico USA Bianca Matamoros-Koonce, argued back.
"In the Bible it says marriage is between Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve!"

A golf course is a willful and deliberate misuse of a perfectly good rifle range.
That answer probably cost her the title. I suspect Hilton gave her a zero for that round...
Yep, he did...[:@]

So...what he's saying is simple. He's entitled to his beliefs, but she is not. See how clever that is?
Free country, free speech..........last time I looked anyway.
She should have never been criticized for her "BELIEFS" in the first place. All the gays want to vilify her because she doesn't think the way they do.
She answered openly and honestly and tried not to offend but she was considered wrong because the majority of the audience was gay? Give me a friggin break.
Everyone is entitled to their beliefs and opinions.......she gave hers........something wrong with that?
I guess if you are gay other people are not entitled to the 1st Amendment.
Miss California should have began her answer with, I didn't really want to go downthe political road, but sinceI amcornered into it:
I am competing for the title of Miss America. My views are not only in line with the majority of Americans but alsoare consistent with the majority of Californians, and also consistent withthe PresidentandVice-President's stated stance on this issue......
I am thankful I don't hold the extremist view Mr. Lewis. Especially when I am anhonest woman, and I believe the next Miss America should be honest and hold the strong values of our great land.
My favorite answer Gov. Palin gave in her debate with Biden was onthe gay marriage question. Biden answered first and said he was for keeping marriage between a man and a woman. Palin verified Biden's stance, and said she agreed with her opponent on the issue.
