Pay to play: It"s the Obama way. So, really, is anyone surprised anymore?

Steven Rattner, the leader of the Obama administration"s auto task force, was one of the executives involved with payments under scrutiny in a probe of an alleged kickback scheme at New York state"s pension fund, according to a person familiar with the matter.
A Securities and Exchange Commission complaint says a "senior executive" of Mr. Rattner"s investment firm met in 2004 with a politically connected consultant about a finder"s fee. Later, the complaint says, the firm received an investment from the state pension fund and paid $1.1 million in fees.
The "senior executive," not named in the complaint, is Mr. Rattner, according to the person familiar with the matter. He is co-founder of the investment firm, Quadrangle Group, which he left to join the Treasury Department to oversee the auto task force earlier this year. Neither Mr. Rattner nor Quadrangle has been accused of any wrongdoing. Mr. Rattner did not return calls for comment.

A spokeswoman for the Treasury, which is in charge of the auto task force, said that "during the transition, Mr. Rattner made us aware of the pending investigation."
In the long-running pay-to-play case, authorities allege that about 20 investment firms made payments in exchange for investments from the $122 billion New York State Common Retirement Fund. The case, being investigated by New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo and the SEC, has led to three criminal indictments and a guilty plea. The attorney general"s office and the SEC declined to comment.

RE: Obama car czar linked to alleged kickback scheme
You have to be lieing. Remember, Pelosi was going to clean the swamp. The administration would never dare appoint crooks. And only Republicans can be crooks. This has got to be a lie.

i'm not saying he's clean, i'm not saying he's dirty.
i'm just saying, for the record, one or two grand juries doen't necessarily make you a bad person...
RE: Obama car czar linked to alleged kickback scheme
boysda, do you see any sort of pattern here with the people Obama associates with? We're not talking one or two people, we're talking a dozen or two who all are very shady individuals. Don't you think this shows alack of character?

my post was intended to be wry, indicating that experiences withone or two (ok...three) grand juries doesn't necessarily mean you're a bad person, but...
yes, it raises concerns in my mind. at a minimum, i have to question the efficacy of the vetting process. at most, i absolutely question the character of some of the appointees.
that being said
1. this is not entirely a new phenomenon in D.C.
2. my earlier tongue-in-cheek statement notwithstanding, I am VERY mindful of the fact that in politics, like no other endeavor, it is very easy to run afoul of a grand jury (but not the law) simply by virtue of one's associations. to a government contractor or lobbyist, the very act of giving a campaign donation can be both a) an exercise in one's constitutionally-guaranteed right to exercise political speech, and b) prima facie evidence of a crime. the only real solution is publicly financing campaigns, and that is at best an imperfect solution fraught with its own perils.
i have friends and associates who have been in Rattner's position. some were scrupulously ethical, some ended up being dirty as hell. i learned long ago to withhold judgment.
RE: Obama car czar linked to alleged kickback scheme
Well, it can't be a surprise, when you start out with a base of old Clinton people and add to that the Chicago underworld of politics and a leader who's has surrounded himself with very questionable anti American characters and out right criminals and cheats, you are going to end up with just what we now have. IMO this is the most crooked anti American government in my memory, and I have been around since FDR.
I have been very critical of osama since well before he was elected, however I have to admit that he is much worse now in real time than I could have ever imagined. I expected over spending but never expected him to totally blitz the Bush administration in spending. I doubted his concern for America but never expected him to become out worst enemy and degrade us around the world. I didn't expect him to suck up to our enemies so fast and so completely. I didn't expect that he had no backbone whatsoever. He scares the crap out of me.
