Ive posted before about the problems we have with many of the younger guys that our company hires and sends out to our site, I swear somedays its like a soaop opera. In the latest episode the following takes place.
They send us a new kid, supposed to have been already trained after 8 weeks of working in the shop in Canada this winter. All hes trained in is sweeping the floor though and hes not very good at it.
3 days into it he cuts his finger with a grinder, small cut, only takes 4 stitches wich are to come out in 10 days. The doctor says he can go back to work on light duty till it heals.Hes doing nothing all day which is fine, he sweeps and cuts material, then the excuses start, he doesnt call in, doesnt show up for work, leaves early, every day its something new.
The companies paying his hotel room and food while hes here, thats fine also, except he starts leaving early on Fridays.Turns out hes going home every weekend 3 hours from here, hes not checking out of the hotel to do so, if he doesnt check out the office doesnt know hes gone so gets his per diem for those 3 or 4 days hes gone because apparently Mondays no longer a work day either.Hes costing us 3 to 4 hundred dollars a week while hes not even on site.
One of the other guys ,49 yrs old,, hard worker, stays 10 hours a day and gets his stuff done gets tired of picking up the guys slack and one day writes something on the board in the shop, cant write it in here but its actually not all that bad, everyone laughed and we forgot about it.
The kid doesnt show up on Monday again but Tuesday sees whats on the board and calls the office, the HR lady starts bombarding my supervisor with emails wanting to know who wrote it, they argue back and forth but the bottom line is shes worried because the little puke got his feelings hurt and wants to write someone up. Wed the kid goes to get his stitches out, its been over 20 days but he didnt want to get taken off light duty.We have a meeting and my supervisor says he has to give them a name, the guy says fine, tell em it was me, I say fine, tell em I wrote stuff about him as well, and the other guy says me to.
The supervisor responds and says were all tired of the kids BS and have requested to all be wrote up for harrassing him, and he even includes himself. This doesnt go over well, the arguments still going.
Come to find out despite daily complaints about this kids attendance, wasting company funds, not calling in, going home etc.. nothings been said to him at all, but theyre intent on writing us up for hurting his feelings[:'(]
Is this really the direction were heading? Is this what the future holds, a bunch of self centered little cry babies that get thier feelings hurt and must be coddled to keep thier self esteem up?Why is it everyone elses fault that people suck at thier jobs. How is calling someone a bad name worse than wasting thousands of dollars of company money?
Sad part is the pukes whining now that nobody will talk to him, he cant figure out why

The manager/floor supervisor/shop steward needs to follow a disciplinary procedure. One such procedure
might look like this :
a: type up a doc stating what the problems are
b: in bullet-points, he needs to bring up each violation or issue which violates HR policy
c: A 'SECOND' needs to be picked by the supervisor; this person will sit-in on a meeting between the
supervisor and the kid who needs to be corrected. This person should be informed he will be a
witness and should act accordingly by keeping his mouth shut and paying attention to the proceedings.
d: Supervisor needs to make an appointment with the kid and discuss each issue on the paper, and ONLY the
issues written on the paper. The meeting must end with a warning that company policy will be adhered to,
he's now been officially warned, further incidents resulting in any more infractions will result in further
disciplinary action affecting compensation and/or future employment, up to and including separation (firing him)
and tell him to sign the paper.
d: if he will not sign the paper, the ""WITNESS" will sign the paper saying he knows the kid was warned
officially, he witnessed it, and the kid refuses to sign the paper.
e: present the paper to HR for disciplinary measures.
There HAS to be an HR procedure or protocol for dealing with non-performance of employees. Your boss (or YOU if you're the GOTO guy in your shop) needs to find out how to initiate 'corrective measures' from the HR handbook. Otherwise, it'll just be a pain in the neck until somebody either gets hurt because of the kid's inadequacy, or somebody pushes a skid of bricks off a platform down onto the the kid's head.....
The problem I see right now is the kid contacted HR before your supervisor did. Your supervisor has had plenty of time to take proper measures at attempting to correct the problem. It probably does not shed a very good light on your supervisor for letting it go this far, and going along with the message on the board.
I kind of get the sense that your shop is a very busy place that is in need of good help. I think the group you have there are hard workers, but it sounds like your workplace is away from the home office, anda little laid back. That is not always a bad thing, but therehas to be proper procedures in place so when a young immature kid comes on the scene, he don't take advantage of it.
I spent about 15 years of my life in retail management, and I have worked closely with human resources. What people don't understand is by the time someone is hired, trained, and put to work, there is a lot vested in that employee. When help is badly needed, there is nothing worse than wasted time and energy, and money.
It sounds to me like your HR department had no idea the kid was a dead beat, and still may not even think so if proper measures had not been taken by your supervisor.

I should have been more specific, we have followed the proper procedure for this kids BS at work, its documented, in writing, its been discussed verbally between us and the office, the president of the company has even been there first hand and witnessed trhe little puke leaving earlyand the standard answer we get is since he was injured at work we need to leave it alone.
Theres some kinda problem with our HR lady and our supervisor, everything that comes up she tries to shift the blame to him for.By the time it makes it through proper channels the person responsibles always getting a pass and the blames shifted to someone else. For instance Ive only been a lead supervisor for a couple weeks, no problems on my record, yet the witch accused me by name of being the one resposible in an email to my supervisor, I had nothing to do with any of it.Its ery frustrating trying to deal with this person.
Oh, and the kid skipped out 30 minutes early again yesterday and didnt show up today, bet were renting an empty hotel room for another weekend[:@]
Wow....what a rotten bit of luck. Sounds like either this kid's got 'juice' in management,
or management needs to grow stones. If there's the type of documentation you claim,
then HR refuses to act and management is refusing to acknowledge both situations.
Outside of out and out spite work against the kid, he needs to be micromanaged to where
he either complies with the rules (dock him an hour's pay for late arrival....dock him an hour's
pay for early departure....deduct the cost of the hotel room from his pay for keeping the room
over the weekend...some places will allow you to 'assign' vacation time to time not in the office so
if he leaves early 5 times, that's 1 day's worth of vacation he's used up). These are things he may
have to endure and really cannot complain about...provided the supervisor is empowered to dock a guy based on his timesheet entries. I know in every shop I ever worked in, lying on your timesheet is grounds for immediate dismissal. In short, there's things the supervisor can do which are within his provence as a personnel manager, but which HR or Management have no specific proscriptions in the manual...just thinkin' here.....certainly sending
a guy home without pay is a wakeup call to the guy who got sent home as well as to management and
HR which will now be forced to deal with an increasingly intolerable situation.
Did this kid work for the government for his first job? Sure sounds like the MO of most government workers.

Unfortunately, thats pretty typical behavior in a factory IME. Once the puke goes toHR first, its all downhill till the floor management smarts up, plays by the book to a T, and nails him in an irrefutable way. Its got nothing to do with the kid's age, and everything to do with the HR vs. thefloor/lower managementattitude, and the fact that the kid is worthless. People with no self-respect and a crappy work-ethic can be found in every generation. Like everything, its the 1%ers who make a bad name for everybody.
Here's hoping your supervisor smarts up and nails the kid in a way that sticks.
A lazy slacker like that trashes morale and disrupts operations.Hadseveral guys like that onsites that i managed. Unfortunately for them, i am the type of guy who fires them first and then tells the company that the lazy little perp is gone. A couple of times i got flak from the company butalways got my way. If it had came down to it; there was always a US government QA guy on site whowould havetold the company owner he wanted the slacker gone.
The daughter of the company ownerstook my advice and fired the company HR lady one morning when her parents were out of town.
What does he do? I'll go to Canada for a few weeks for some work...
