Just heard that they have captured an American owned ship. So, what's gonna happen. Gonna have the fleet Marines give them the old Stephen Decatur routine? Or, will the owners bend over and pay them a ransom just like everybody else?

The owners will pay the scum, that's SOP in these cases. I watched a show about the piracy problem recently, most people wouldn't believe how pervasive it has become.

Seems like it is pretty much an established business and the ship owners are always willing to play ball. Dunno why they should waste taxpayers money having the navy patrol in that area, if they can't do anything about it.

The alternative for the owners and their investors would be for the ships to go a longer, and therefore more expensive route. Paying ransom is also cheaper than replacing ships, so they pay the scum. A lot of the pirate problem would disappear if the military vessels patrolling the trouble spots could simply "shoot first and ask questions later", I find it difficult to imagine that innocent fishing vessels would be carrying some of the firepower that pirate boats do.

My understanding is also that they have pirates who have built large estates ashore with their loot. Seems like they could track some of these guys down and send them a SEAL team as a housewarming present.

But that's the whole purpose of our Navy. To keep shipping lanes open to trade traffic.
We need to send in the seals and deal with them. Unfortunately, we will just get lofty speeches out this White House. Perhaps, Obama will appologize for our flagged ship entering their international water space and forcing them to take action. Then shipping company will just pay ransom. On the bright side, Black Water (the did change their name) offers escort services and they should be hiring for any of you guys out of work or facing lay offs. Could be the stress relief your looking for.

I understand these pirates are pretty well behaved -- other than holding ships for ransom. To whit, they don't rape and kill ship crew and/or passangers. It is a business thing. I don't like it, but I suppose it is a question as to who ought to pay the price tagto remedythis -- NATO, EU, US, the shipping magnates? Now, if you ask me, my question is why as an American tax payer should I have to pay to keep these shipping lanes open, to make the high seas safe for foreign manufacturers to undermine and undercut US manufacturers at home? Granted, I am framing this in a provocative and biased manner, but it is an angle worth considering. Whose fight is it? Who should pay for it? Why do I have to pay for it? What if I don't pay for it, how does that shake my tree? I'm not sure it does.
