The sentencing of a 75-year-old widow to 40 lashes and four months in prison for mingling with two young men who were reportedly bringing her bread has sparked new criticism of Saudi Arabia's ultraconservative religious police and judiciary.[/b]

Khamisa Sawadi, who is Syrian but was married to a Saudi, was convicted and sentenced last week for meeting with men who were not her immediate relatives. The two men, including one who was Sawadi's late husband's nephew, were also found guilty and sentenced to prison terms and lashes.

Others have also spoken out against the case against Sawadi, accusing the religious police of going too far.

"How can a verdict be issued based on suspicion?" Saudi doctor and columnist Laila Ahmed al-Ahdab wrote in Al-Watan on Monday. "A group of people are misusing religion to serve their own interests."

so what is really happening is akin to bag lickin' the Saudi's for their oil while they slowly reform one small thing a decadeand support the spread of their doctrine world wide....I see...aaaack, the old lady was a Syrian anyway and was stupid enough to marry a saudi, let alone ask for some bread....is that how it goes?

It often amuses me that in a country where one of our most cherished rights is spelled out in plain language in the first amendment to our Constitution, the freedom of religion, that anyone living here would dare question the beliefs of other cultures. Bottom line, it's their law, their beliefs, and completely legal there. It's also none of our damned business.

true kev, true, however, saudi is supporting the taliban and other terrorists in the name of religion, but because they have oil we are to turn a blind eyeto theirislamic based law that goes against our systems and beliefs? Yet doing business with communist china is ok while still shutting out cuba is allowed?

I never said anything about supporting their ways, only that I don't live under them. If it were left to me we'd just buy even more oil from Canada and Mexico and tell the Saudis and the other 12th century mentality ragheads to kiss our collective asses, they'd go broke within a year or two without their largest customer and no longer be a threat.
