Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default Civil unrest this summer?

My cousin is an officer in the Marines. He and I had a long conversation last night, and during the conversation he explained to me that he is busy training for exercises here in the states. What he explained sounded like they were getting ready to attack us. Lol. Like I said, it sounded like, not that, that was the agenda. He told me, without going into details, that he has been told by hire ups they were just preparing just in case. In case of what I ask? He could not go into detail, so it leaves me to wonder if there is something going on that we do not know of? Or, is this normal training. I personally do not know. This is the first time he has spoke of this type of training. He has been in Iraq and Afghanistan since we first went it. That would be about a year before operations.

Think thatsome Marines regularly hold training for dealing with crowd control in riot situations. The stories occasionally get written up in Leatherneck Magazine. Would assume that "just in case" represents just that.

Thanks for the clarification. It was a drive by conversation, that found its way between the relentless bashing of the Messiah. Obama is not liked much by our Marines. Or at least by the ones I know.

I have to wonder why he thinks the Marines would be called in at all, since that would both violate the Posse Commitatus as well as usurping the state's right to call out their own Natl. Guard and law enforcement.

Kevin,

I was unclear about this too and looked it up. Marines and Army personnel were used, in conjunction with the National Guard during the L.A. riots. I would assume that they could also be used legally, independent of state control and cooperation with the National guard, if martial law was declared.

A govenor can declare martial law in time of emergency, with the backing of the natl. guard of his or her own state. With that much firepower, combined with law enforcement, there's no need for the Marines to restore order. I could see them getting called in if we descended into another civil war, but that's the only circumstance I can think of where federal troops could legally be deployed on domestic soil. The LA riot situation was a total violation of the Posse Commitatus, the LA police alone could've handled things if they hadn't been so reticent to actually fire dem fancy pistols of theirs.

Kevin,

I don't know all the legalities of it, I just know that Marines still get training in dealing with domestic riots, crowd control, etc. and have been involved in such incidents in recent history and will likely do so again.

As an interesting sidenote, in one of the reports on the L.A. riots they mentioned that Marines were working with cops in responding to violence in a house. The police prepared to go in and told the Marines to "cover us." The cops meant just cover their backs and be prepared to respond if needed. The Marines interpreted it as meaning provide covering fire and pumped about 200 rounds into the place. Reactions like that in the first couple hours would have probably nipped things in the bud.
