WASHINGTON (Reuters) "“ Wally Darneille has two words for PresidentBarackObama'sproposal to end the so-called direct payment subsidy to large U.S. farmers: "That's insanity."
"I think we're really going down the wrong path here," said Darneille, the head of a farmer-owned cotton marketing cooperative in Lubbock, Texas.
An array of lawmakers and farm groups agree, suggesting poor odds for the idea to become law.
Foes say the idea is poorly timed and aimed at growers who account for three-fourths of farm production. Two longtime Senate backers of farm subsidy reform oppose Obama's proposal.
As part of his 2010 budget, Obama proposed phasing-out direct payments to farmers with sales of more than $500,000 a year, to save $9.8 billion over 10 years.
Direct payments, which total $5.2 billion a year, are paid regardless of crop prices.
I would end them all. I'm sure this doesn't sit well with Ted Turner though.

So FM, you would do away with the CRP program as well, even though it has been credited to helping wildlife thrive in many areas of the country? Not to speak of the good that CRP also does for stopping water and wind errosion of land that doesn't do well in producing crop.

With out subsidies many farmers couldnt make it. Our input cost are so high. With the price of corn where it is now you arent covering your cost at all. With only $500000 in sales doesnt take long to come up with that if you farm more then a a few thousand acres.

Yes, I would. I would also get rid of price controls and crop controls. You grow what you want and sell it for what you can get. No one knows the true cost of farm products.

I believe it has to be free market. If I shingle roofs for a living and have to do 100 shingle job to make a years wages and only do 80, should the government pay me for the other 20? My start up cost may be less in dollars but it's apt to be everything that I have. Stop all of it or do it for everyone. osama wants to do it for all those who can't do it by taking it from the ones that can. How long can that turkey fly?
President Bush tried phasing out direct payments to farmers with sales over $250,000 It was overridden by congress with Obama's help. No doubt there are people gaming the system and there is far reaching impacts associated with this system around the world. Perhaps it should be replaced with a insurance system to protect the American farmer in times of disaster and provide help for conservation practices. Foreign competition is a real threat to the American farmer and consumer, we have always taken for granted that we would always have the safest and most affordable food supply in world. The WTO seeks to even the playing field with farmers world wide, after the American farmer revolutionized modern farming techniques. That in my opinion is unfair and a threat to our security. My biggest fear is this plan by Obama, is simply to appease the biggest complainers of US farm subsidies and those are China, Brazil, India and South Africa to name a few.

I would love to see all of the CRP acres renewed. That one is good for the land thus benefiting everyone.
I beleave the CRP program helps the ground also, but the problem lays with the fact that you can go buy farms on credit and sign them up, let the program pay for the ground and then you own the ground, and now your a Rich landowner at tax payers expense.
