Just when you thought they were running out of things to tax, Fox news reports the democrat
congress is mulling a plan to tax us on the miles we drive each day. Not a gas tax, it will raise
the cost of commuting to work for all of us who do not have the benefit of mass transit and who
live outside of bicycle range.
Oregon has been discussing this very thing. I brought it up ayear ago. Seems they have been too successful in getting folks to go green with hybirds and high milage cars, their gas taxes are coming up short paying for the roads. They need to find another way. The problem with it, how do you do it? GPS? That's a slippery slope. It won't be long before they want that information for speeding tickets or crime investigation. Miliage meter? Where have you traveled? What states and for how long? Nope, not an easy solution.

Note that all GM cars have had built in GPS for quite a while... "OnStar"...
I'm curious as to whether the proposed "Miles Driven Tax" is in substitution for the Gas Tax, or in addition to the Gas Tax. Seems to me that the Gas Tax is more likely to induce folks to drive vehicles with a higher MPG rating, unless the Miles Driven Tax builds in a way to tax my 15 mpg F150 at a higher rate per mile than my wife's 21 mpg Impala...
I am glad the admin is taking a sane approach to this.
Enforcement would be simple....when you inspect your car every other year, they take your mileage.
Calc the tax, and hit you for the money. WHen you sell the car, they take the mileage from the last
inspection and subtract from the time of sale. Not too hard...sure there will be cheats, but overall
they will get what they're after. While the admin states it will not look for this tax now, who's to say
what's in store as more people 'go green' and the feds cannot collect enough infrastructure money from
the gas tax ? I would not hold my breath....
Too easy to cheat that system. GPS is the only way they'll do it. Otherwise, you'll have folks switching the gears for their speedo, or disconnecting it completely.
You need to learn how to hold your breath... I suspect they'll soon figure out a way to tax you for breathing. Afterall, I believe a good portion of what you exhale is CO2...
You can bet that some states will opt for this tax. Some states like CA. have to do something drastic. They atre flat broke.
Well let them start deporting the illegals that are taking them broke instead of paying billions per year for there food stamps, welfare and health care.
