Actually they won't, the current audit system is about like hitting the lottery, you could go the rest of your life and never turn in a tax form with a lottery chance of being audited. Also provisions have been passed, I beleave Clinton passed, where they can't come to your home, if audited. Many people work their whole lives and never have filed.

Good luck Rain. You can try it if you want to but it only takes once and just because it was that way before does not mean chump face won't change it.

The guy at the gun store here says the amount of Delayed responses from BATF are up drastically and many guys who were never denied before are now getting the Rejected response.

The more you make the more likely you are to be audited, though I think I did hear they were changing the standards etc... also that you're unlikely to be audited more than 2-3x after that its unlikely but I could be wrong...

Also if you make 40k and cheat on your taxes by 4-5k big deal, if you make 10 million and don't pay 4million....they put a little more emphasis on those guys....

either way its breaking the law...

also if you don't claim/pay yoru taxes, would that affect you from collection Social Security down the road?

FYI, thats because you and your friends don't make a blip on the radar screen.[8D]

Interesting thing I found out recently. If your a citizen ofthe UKand living abroad, you don't have to pay any taxes. All I can say is that it is very interesting.

Doesnt matter how big of blip you make if something comes up they dont like they will check you out.

One year when I was just getting started in my construction business I had a terribly low income, under 20 grand I believe after taking out the expenses. There was no earned income credit at the time for having kids so it wasnt really a big deal when I filed, I wasnt getting nothing back and wound up paying in a little.

Somebody. somewhere pushed a wrong button on thier computer and my daughters birthdate didnt match, they came after me 2 years in a row as a result.

It really doesnt take much with all the technology used today for anything thats not quite right to throw up a red flag, one number out of place will grab thier attention if the computer picks it up.

Not actually the case. They try to target folks who pay enough in taxes to make the audit worth the effort, but not enough to afford a lawyer who can fight them properly. Every now and then they go after someone prominent, like Snipes, to keep the rest of us paying up. Snipes had a good bit of money, but not enough to really play hardball.

A couple of points here.First of all, Reid is a certifiable dummy. The tax system is not voluntary as far as filing and paying is concerned. It's called voluntary because you volunteer the information on your own by filing the tax form as opposed to someone from the government coming around and assessing and collecting a tax. But in a sense, payment of the tax is voluntary. They cannot make you pay.

As far as audits are concerned, I always advised my clients to incorporate because small businesses which are incorporated are far less likely to be audited than sole proprietors. Why is that?Because guys who incorporate tend to set up seperate bank accounts, keep good books, keep personal expenses seperated from business expenses, and have an accountant watching over their financial affairs. Now those are not the reasons that the IRS isn't as likely to target them. From the IRS perspective, they are much less likely to find adjustments in small businesses which are incorporated.

Biggest audit target by the IRS?Lawyers.I had lawyers as clients. They handle finances very sloppily, although there are exceptions, and they believe they can argue their way out of any conflict. But the reason the IRS targets them is not for those reasons. The reason is because they are more likely to collect more tax when they audit a lawyer.

So to get back to the original question. Is the tax system voluntary? In a sense, yes. Can they make you pay? No, actually, they can't. But they can make you wish you had.
