I dont get some peoples way of thinking. We had a 4 man crew at work, we have a huge contract to fix hundreds of wind turbine blades, and several years worth of work for one company alone.
While most places are laying off and cutting costs were actually expanding, weve leased a huge new shop and have 2 other buildings to open in the area again this spring.Pays pretty decent, the benefits arent terrible, and our supervisor doesnt make anyone really bust thier ass for thier money, as long as your there and get your job done by the end of the day hes happy. The day can be as long as you want, we have an unlimited overtime policy as long as theres at least 2 people in the building you can work however long you want as many days in a row as you want. The main office is 900 miles away, we have nobody breathing down are necks as long as our numbers look good and no outside inteference.
Unemployment is high, real high in this area, I can off the top of my head think of over 3000 jobs in one town alone that have been cut, business closed, etc...Its very ugly out there right now and we got enough work lined up we could potentially ride this whole recession out and come out pretty good in the end.
So last week after his final warning the guy that been there the longest sits around practically daring them to fire him, and after 3 days of totally crazy behavior gets his wish and is gone. This week our resin we use was starting to go off as we were finishing a repair, we had 3 maybe 4 minutes total left to finish it and the newest guy just snaps, starts screaming and yelling takes his stuff off and walks away.We actually gave him 3 1/2 hours to calm down and come back but he never showed, since he was driving a rental car the company is paying for we had no choice but to call the office, hes fired as well.Weve lost 1/2 our crew in 2 weeks not because of the economy but just because of stupidity.
Bad part is the office being in Canada has no fast way of filling these positions, it could take over a month, longer if they dont get on it fast so theres just 2 guys and we got enough work to keep at least 6 going steadily.Unlimited overtimes no longer a option, its pretty much mandatory, Im headed in again right now and have been on overtime since yesterday morning. Not really a point to this, just needed to vent a little, we got another contract yesterday and the blades are there so its looking like the 80 hour work week might be making a comeback for the forseeable future.
Why does this not surprise me? My wife's business is the same way. She'll interview people who want to work, need the money and then not be responsible enough to show up on time if at all. Then people say we're in really bad times.[:'(]
FYI, you company isn't the only one hiring. Verizon is doing major expansion right now.

Take advantage of the overtime while it is available.
For the life of me i cannot understand what makes someguys tick. In my line of work i have seen all kinds of nutcase behavior.Everyone in my field makes at least $27 per hour and most make much more than that. I've had guys come in give me their two weeks noticeandaresignation letteras long as the Dead Sea scrolls. i just throwthe letter into the can and tell them there is no need for a two weeks notice, please leave right now. If the guy stays around for another two weeks he will just whine, trash equipment and be a general pain in the butt.
In my line of work i have seen all kinds of nutcase behavior.
I thought you were in the bomb business. Is being a nut case a plus or a disadvantage?

I retired in May of 2000. So I don't pay much attention to how things are going. My kids have pretty good jobs and two of them are working on finishing college. My wife could retire in July but she might do a couple more years of part time. She works for a Canadian Company in ND.

I wished verizon was still up here but we are stuck with fairpoint now..Our company has a hiring freeze corporate wide so no hiring here.. Also they just shut down a machine in N.C. while Millinocket just shut down a machine for at least another month.. So you are lucky to be in a company that is doing good right now. If the price of oil stays down you might be looking at some slow downs for a while though. They are currently looking at the cost factors up here with oil prices being down where they are right now. They say that wind turbines and cost factors are not adding up with the drop in oil prices..

Being a nutcasecan be either an advantage or a disadvantage dependingon the person. So long as theperson earns his/herkeep, works well with others, does what he/she is told, has a proper respect for explosive ordnance and is relatively sober there is no problem. There are some who just cannot put all thesethings together.

Well, your right and you would know why I would know. But all those positions are for contractors only. I know several of the people working at verizon, even higher ups, and down at the tech level, its not that easy to get on.
