If you answer is yes, you should demand domestic drilling here at home to keep oil prices low. Both are hurting very bad and this is the one way we could do it to be successful without a single bomb. Did you all see that Castro has asked for Gitmo back? How many think this is a good idea and we don't need it? If you do, I must ask you what happens to a abdon military base capable of large ships and a lot of troops? No any country with a few naval vessels, a few infantry boots and missiles capable of hitting the USA? I do. What would happen to oil prices if we turned over the base back to Cuba and Russia moved in? I'll give you three guess and the first two don't count.

I have my Chevy Volt ordered do you?
Why would I waste my money? We have plenty of oil and will be oil based for many years down the road.
I'm in the market for a new used car. It's for my wife. She doesn't get a choice. I've been researching for several months. I have the make and model now picked out but haven't found the right one yet. It's all wheel drive and will get around 20mpg avg as long as she keeps her foot off the gas. That's my job and then it drops to 9mpg.

While I support greater domestic production, it won't alter the price of a commodity traded on the world market by much. Oil producers will demand what they think the market will bear regardless of source. There's also our severely diminished capacity for refining it to consider, you can only refine so much oil, and the companies that own the current ones have no incentive to build new ones.

FM, you are correct that the US needs to pick up oil production. It is vital to our national interest that we do so. However, very little new drilling is happening in the domestic oil patch. Drilling has stopped on every well in progress that i am aware of (8 of them).
Here isthe Baker-Hughes rig count for 31 January, 09. It is down by 291 from 1 February last year. This is very sad.
RE: Do you really want to beat Iran and/or Russia?
You are correct. Lawsuits are hindering all drilling here in America. You all need to wise up. Just today, Obama's interior secretary canceled the oil leases Bush sold in the last months of his presidency. Get this, they would put oil rigs in our prestine wilderness. Where else should we drill for oil? Washington DC? I'm happy about that, but are you?

while I do not think closing Gitmo completely is a good idea, I can't help but wonder what would happen to the base after it is abandoned.
I say, keep the base and open up special trade and travel with cuba immediately, let goods and services flow, enjoy Cuba's beaches and cigars.
Don't know about their beaches, but the hotel accomodations are decrepit and their cigars are not so good as they once were. Give me a good Dominican any day, and they'll beat the ammonia-esque aroma of those Cuban rags any day....
