my 9 year old brought home a nifty little over view on President Obama, that only showed a few half and incomplete truths. nothing wrong (except it said at 10 years old he wanted to go to Hawaii to get a better American education, which isn't true) however, nothing really "right" either, just very hazy, partially detailed guides. it also had a "graphic organizer" where she had to write what his campaign promises were, his political party, home town, time lines, major achievements, challenges and then a sequence of challenges ..... good gawd.
here is what I stapled to the front of it for her to send back
I realize the article is intended to briefly educate on our new President, but it appears to me to be of half truths and incomplete. I have read many articles about President Obama and studied his campaign as it unfolded over the past two years. I"ve also read as much as I could find on everything about him. It actually IS an incredible read, a man who was, for the most part, abandoned by his parents, raised in Hawaii by his grandparents, who had admitted drug use, but still found the strength to power his way through Columbia and then to Harvard, and building a very respectable resume of public and social serviceds. I particularly like Michelle Obama"s story, which many will never know anything about and his mother as well.
I wanted to say that I didn"t care for the one sided overview that this article gave (in my opinion). For instance, Barack Hussein Obama II is his given name, just like the 43rd President was George Walker Bush. If the article wants to talk about parents, grandparents and where there were from, how they met, and who they were, include all the details, not just certain ones. Not doing so is a half truth to who President Obama is.
As for the Campaign Promises?
"Better Health Care" means National Health Care, it should be called what it is.
"Lower taxes" means Wealth Redistribution, call it what it is.
"Global Warming" is a theory, not unlike evolution. Truthfully, we"ve been "warming" since the last ice age, have we not?
"Stop The War" - there is no war. There was never a congressional act of war signed, instead it was a resolution. There is a difference, see the below link.
I sincerely hope President Obama becomes the greatest President in the history of this great country. He is an American, he has a biracial ethnicity including Kenyan that results in him having dark colored skin. I think its wrong to label him "African American", that dismisses his maternal heritage as insignificant.
Although you make valid points, you'll be the laughing stock of the teacher's lounge if you really cited Wikipedia as your sources
Funny and sad at the sametime. Your a college student and your showing your lack of ability to do research and verify facts. There is nothing wrong with Wikipedia that isn't wrong with all other sources of information out there. In the words of Neal Boortz "Don't believe anything you hear of read, not even from me, until you have gone out and research it yourself, through multiple sources and your convinced it is true.".

FM I even set myself up for yall, I thought you would have cited to study on Britannica v. Wiki and accuracy (I think that only dealt with the sciences though). I'll give it to you, wiki is a good way to FIND sources, however, not the best source in and of itself.

haha, do you guys just try and grasp the farthest thing from the truth you can? Anyone and everyone can post on wiki, college professors tend to use it merely for comic relief

I'd bet that the fourth grade teacher's lounge isn't jam-packed with intellectual giants and world-class researchers... I doubt they ever look very far past wikipedia.
Just for kicks, since wiki is such a horrible source of basic biographical information, why don't you pick out a few facts from each of the four articles cited that are wrong....

never said those particular articles themselves may not be right, I just said wiki wasn't a reputable source
