The debate over the practice of men marrying children in Saudi Arabia was back in the spotlight this week, with the kingdom's top cleric refusing to annul the marriage of an 8-year-old girl to a 47-year-old man.
"The Human Rights Commission opposes child marriages in Saudi Arabia," al-Harithi said. "Child marriages violate international agreements that have been signed by Saudi Arabia and should not be allowed." He added that his organization has been able to intervene and stop at least one child marriage from taking place.
Worked for many years in Saudi and this isone of a few things that i just cannot accept about that country. Saudi clerics give a really bad name to Islam. They have bowderlized the Koran becausethey refuse to separate Koranic teachings from Bedouin traditions. For example: The wearing of a black ninja outfit by females is a Bedouin tradition that goes back thousandsof years.
King Fahd was trying to take Saudi out of the dark ages when it came to female rights. Then along came Abdullah and set the place back a hundred years.
My friends and i used to sit around and make up questions for the cleric who answered religious questions at one of the Saudi papers. One of the guys discoveredthat a lady who hasno breast milk to feed her new born baby loses any claim to that baby if another lady nursesand cares for it.We put together a what if scenario, had it translated by a Jordanian friend and sent it off to the paper.
"I am in love with a lady and want to marry her. However, there might be complications. My mother borethat girl but she was nursed by another lady. Canlegally marry the girl Iam in love with?
I really couldn't care less. It's not my country, not my culture, not my business. As long as the girls in question aren't American citizens, I say, "pffft".

That is just cruel. Can that 8 year old girl defend herself? And if her gov isn't willing to do it shouldn't someone stand up for her. Do we take advantage of our freedom so much that we think others should not be entilted to it as well?

BS. If the Saudis want freedom, then they must achieve it for themselves. The US didn't just drop out of the sky. It took almost 30 years of rabble-rousing, fighting, and debating to get it right. Countless blood, sweat, and tears.
The Peace of Westphalia seems outdated to many people today, but I stand by the sovereignty of each nation around the world. I don't want anyoutsiders coming to our country and telling us what we should or must do. It goes both ways.
When you consider how many years it takes to properlly train a wife, is adding a few more years of available training timeall that bad?[8D]
Yes, 8 is too young however remember not long ago 14 year olds were the norm in this country and abitrally that age was set to 18. To today, most don't get married until well into their 20's. Remember one of the great leaders still looked up to this day (and on our money), loved very young girls while being our ambassador to France. Anyone ever heard of Ben Franklin?

Business is business. Sometimes you people act as though the money is going straight into the hands of the Wahabi'ists. The government, in the form of Saudi Aramco, controls almost the entireoil industry there.
As long as both the US and the House of Saud have a common enemy in radical Islam, I see no problem with buinsess as usual.
