(4/3/03, 3 p.m. ET) -- Dixie Chick Natalie Maines told a New Zealand TV reporter last week that her now-infamous slam at President George W. Bush was a joke.
Maines admitted that she told a London concert audience that the group was ashamed that the President is from their home state of Texas, but added, " It was a joke and it wasn' t planned. And it was really funny at the time. It got lots of cheers, and that' s what it was meant for. You see the trouble that you can get into if you speak religion or politics. It gets people very upset."
Maines issued a written apology after making the remark at a March 10 concert, but stations continued to ban the Chicks' music on radio stations across the country.
In addition, the Dixie Chicks' Home album saw a more than 40 percent decline in sales after Maines' s remark.

I guess dixie chick' s wallet is more important than her unamerican ,unpatriotic, president slamming, country betrayal comments! She' s not off the hook with me. I will protest with my wallet on all these celebrities who have an agenda against my country or my President. I' m making a list! Free Iraq! God bless the USA!

I was a big Dixie chicks supporter, I know that hasn' t or won' t win me alot on this board, but they, more actually she NM, are/is losing a ton of respect with me. If was was truely joking and she would have come out a and siad that right away and said she made a mistake and didn' t mean I would have been ok with it because all of us make jokes we shouldn' t at times we shouldn' t. But to say it seriously then apologize then try to make it out to be a joke just stinks of lies and back tracking to try and get moe money. BLEH!! I have no problem with her having an opinion and being able to state that opinion but d*(m-it women stand up for yourself, if you believe something stand up for don' t freakin' back track in order to make a few more bucks. BLEH!
Apology not accepted! Too little too late!! She has built her legacy. Now she needs to live with it. Just like Clinton she will continue to try to remanufacture that legacy to make herself look good, at least better. Just like Clinton she will whine that people misunderstood her, her statement was taken out of context. I' d rather hear her whine than sing. My small wallet will speak for me. It' s too bad that the sales on their last CD decreased by only 40%. I was hoping for 100%.

like voodoo says, if it was a joke she would have said that immediately after being called on it. Not only that, what she said isn' t joke material. A joke is something funny. How can what she said be construed as funny? She must be pretty stupid to take nearly a month to make up this lie. Then again, she was stupid for saying it to a majority of Bush supporters to begin with.

RE: Dixie Witch says it was a joke...
Boy she just keeps putting her foot in her mouth. This will just proves she is playing what ever crowd she can to drum up the old mighty buck. I really have lost respect for her now.

I used to like their music, but always thought they were idiots when they opened their mouths to speak. I was very offended when I first heard about the idiot Maines and her statement. But last week she was on INSIDE EDITION and she basically said that she stood by her statement and had the right to freedom of speech just like every American. THAT DID IT for me--she' s right that she has freedom of speech and we have the right to avoid buying anything that is affiliated with them.

Natalies says what ever sounds good at the time and what ever her publicist tell her to say. She is a moron and by her recent statements she seems to be getting dumber.lol
I saw Travis Tritt interviewed on O' Reilly and some other country musicians inviewed on other shows and they were all asked their opinion. All these singers were also very patriotic and in support of the war. They all said that she should have immediatly appologized and then gone on every tv and radio show they could admiting they were stupid to say such a thing and that they were going to do anything they could to make it right etc. But instead they are hiding out and then the only comments Natalie make, just seem to dig her hole deeper.
I hope that the Dixie Chicks (or at least Natalie) pay a huge finacial price for these stupid comments. I have no respect for her and the only way I' d maintain any respect for the other two is if they booted Natalie.
