I could get a solar system and tell the electric co. to buzz off
With the 30% Federal tax credit and my home state's 35% tax credit forsolar power system purchase and installation, I can buy a system and get it 65% paid for.
That's a big deal with the cost of a basic photovoltaic system starting at about $12,000.
Have any of the rest of you looked into these incentives or solar systems in general?
Looking better all the time to me.

I am looking into windmills. Its a 20K upfront fee. You feed the grid and get paid, and after incentives, its comes out to 10K. Return is low. But mutuals is no return right now.
Bad part is, if I loose power in the nieghborhood, I don't get to use that power. I just feed the grid.

If I REALLY wanted to be completely independent, I would have to go with an off-grid system and get about 70KW worth of storage batteries to put in the basement, then about $40,000 extra to get enough panels to keep the batteries charged.

I researched it, but that was when the fed credit had expired. I'll need to look into it again, although I just had a new roof put on the house. I'd need to make sure the installation wouldn't effect the warranty. Combine solar panels with an electric hot water on demand system, and you'll have even more savings.

I looked into it, but I'm in a 'temporary' house right now, I dont plan on staying in a townhome much longer than 5 years... plus i dont use that much energy.I'm going to build my next house, and there is no doubt in my mind it will be off grid.
I do however have plans to make a solar-generator for my freezers. for about $200 i can keep my freezers cold for few days, which is important considering i have 200 lbs of meat in there.

BC, I work on windmills, be carefull what you get, some are very labor intensive requiring thousands of dollars in maintainence every year.Ironically the wind itself beats the hell of them, especially the blades which is what I fix.Just the cost of having a crane on site for a couple days will give you a stroke

Hey Peta, don't you have to shut it down around 60 mph winds and above?

Fm, there is a cut off where the blade pitches in a certain MPH wind and shuts it down.Thats not really in my line of work and I just started doing this this spring but I believe {dont quote me on this} it varies with the size and design of the turbine as to what the cut off speed is.
Another consideration with wind speed is during maintainence cranes and crews cant safely work if the winds over a certain speed.Downfall is your paying for the crane to sit there weather its operating or not and many times your also paying people to sit there weather theyre doing anything or not.You get a crane set up and the wind blows for 3 days or a week your losing a lotta money in downtime alone.
