Congress better have this money tied up. In the past with the Bush Tax Cuts GM and tons of other US mfg's took those tax cuts and built new operations all over the world. This was a big part of destroying our economy. We have the same # of people working in Mfg as we did in the 1940's. While China went from 50% Unemployment to under 10%. That was our jobs and our governement tax cuts employing those people.
They should be hung if they simply use the money to close down US plants and create more jobs in China and Mexico. I know this is not the Republican way but things have to change.
We have the same # of people working in Mfg as we did in the 1940's.
But manufacturing output has been out performing our GDP growth and growing close to 4% since the 40's.

Oh, and higher taxes would have kept them here, right? Higher cost of labor AND higher taxes. What an allure to stay in the U.S.
Yes it would because it's now patriotic to pay higher taxes. Of course that's only for the rich people.

See, there's where your wrong. I don't personally like GM but many love them and swear by them. I prefer Fords and have had better luck with them. However, to say they can't make a better product egnores all of their divisions and companies they own. Take the government mandates off of them and let's see them operate in a truely free market.

Fieldmouse who are you trying to sell that crap to?
Ameriucan auto makers are in the crapper for a reason. They are selling fewer vehicles bottom line - people want Toyota, Honda, Volkswagen etc, they do NOT want American auto's anymore. Check no further than the conditions of the company - bad products kill companies faster than anything else.
If GM and Ford etc had changed 5-7 years ago, moved away from the gas guzzler SUV's and trucks, and matched Toyota quality and price and given Americanswhat they wanted they might have averted this whole damn mess.
Instead, itwas almost GWish in stay thecourse, continue making the big SUV's and trucks, behind themarket in hybrid's ...... there is a reason they're where they are and itall starts with the products they're selling man
If I'm not mistaken, Toyota sales were down something like 30% in Nov. The whole thing is just a big mess. IMO, bad management (which includes marketing, design, etc.) is the culprit along with skyrocketing costs (including tax rates and labor related expenses).

BS, Stealthy, who does buy their cars then? I've said this many times before, my Lincoln LS was one awesome car. My wife's Jaguar is an awesome car, however no longer owned by Ford. My Expedition has over 300k and my next vehicle that will replace it will be the Excursion. The real problem comes once again from Washington, who thinks they know better. Forcing the Big 3 to meet silly CAFE standards is a load of BS. They have been forced for years to sell these little cars and loose money on each and everyone while forcing folks like myself who love SUVs to subsidize them.CAFE standards have never reduced our gas usage the very reason we were told we needed them. If it's true that Americans want the smaller cars now due to gas milage, why not get rid of CAFE standards?

RE: GM Better Guarantee
Since GM and the big 3 want a bailout paid for by the tax payers then we should all become shareholders/ owners. With that in mind we should all be given employee discounts on purchasing a new truck forever. You go into a dealership, show them you are a tax payer and get a quick no haggle 25% under MSRP. Ibet GM would take back top spot from Toyota pretty quickly.
