The government said new applications for jobless benefits rose to a seasonally adjusted 542,000 from a downwardly revised figure of 515,000 in the previous week. That's much higher than Wall Street economists' expectations of 505,000, according to a survey by Thomson Reuters.
That is also the highest level of claims since July 1992, the department said, when the U.S. economy was coming out of a recession.
Yep, the low gas prices are gonna come at a cost of a lot of jobs in exploration, drilling, and production and support industries. Not nearly as many folks are anxious to drill low production wells for 60 bucks a barrel compared to 120 bucks a barrel.

Sure do hate to see drilling rigs sitting idle. For 20+ years after the oil bust in the 80s there were dozens of rigs sitting rusting in a yard near OK City. Those rigs have been refurbished and the place isempty. Looks like that yard may soon be full of rigs again and that is very bad.[:@]

True, Kind of has the smell of the mid 80s agian. But this time its not OPEC.
Also, theresanother reason exploration is going to get killed as well.

That would be too simple. All those huricanas that tore up our refinerys had nothing to do with that I suppose? Or the speculators? Or OPEC raising prices? But ill remember that line of thought in the next 4 years. If you are in office, its your fault.
Wait, Bush is not out of office until Jan. So I guess we need to praise Bush.
