Default Honda opens new auto plant in Indiana

Isn't Indiana right down the street from Detroit?

Honda opens new U.S. plant as Detroit seeks bailout
By Andrea Hopkins

GREENSBURG, Indiana (Reuters) - The rest of the country may have been debating the possible bankruptcy of America's iconic automakers on Monday, but in southeast Indiana more than 1,000 U.S. workers were cheering the opening of Honda's newest assembly plant.

As a shiny Honda Civic sedan rolled up beside Indiana's governor and Honda's president, Greensburg Mayor Gary Herbert posed a question designed to remind Americans that the U.S. auto industry extends beyond Detroit.

"Is this Civic an American-built automobile?" Herbert thundered, smiling at a sea of white-suited workers who seemed very pleased to have landed high-paying jobs in an industry where layoffs are common.

"Yes," came the shouted reply from hundreds of voices.

The rise of Honda's mammoth new car plant in America's farming heartland is a stark contrast to the layoffs and plant closings announced in recent months by General Motors Corp, Ford Motor Co and Chrysler LLC.

But for the Honda workers here, their jobs -- with a starting wage of $18.41 an hour -- are just as much part of the U.S. auto industry as those at their imperiled Detroit competitors. They just don't get as noticed.

"GM has laid off and cut back how many people and Honda is building a plant. What is Honda doing right? Maybe they should look at this model and learn something instead of getting a bailout," shrugged new Honda worker Larry Giles, 41.

According to 2007 figures compiled by the Center for Automotive Research, foreign automakers including Honda, Toyota and Nissan employed some 113,000 workers in the United States, about half of the 239,000 employed by Detroit's Big Three.

Like much of the country, Honda workers in Indiana have been watching the debate over the proposed $25 billion rescue plan of GM, Ford and Chrysler with mounting frustration.

OPPOSED TO BAILOUT

"I don't think they should be bailed out at all," said paint shop worker Tony Mitchell, 38. Hired by Honda in July after being laid off from his job at an American faucet-maker, Mitchell said his job was "a dream come true." And he doesn't like the precedent set by a bailout of Honda's competitors.

"It says that if you get in another bind three years down the road someone is going to bail you out again," he said.

Officially, Honda is far more circumspect about prospects for an industry rescue plan.

"Honda would support measures that would maintain the stability and viability of the auto industry," Honda spokesman Jeffrey Smith said in an interview, noting that parts suppliers were heavily integrated throughout the industry.

That the so-called foreign "transplants" are keeping their heads down as Congress debates the future of their U.S. competitors comes as no surprise to economist Sherry Cooper, executive vice-president of BMO Financial Group in Toronto.

Fantastic news for the US.

I don't buy it that if GM goes all of the jobs will be lost. We have millions in GM's supplier chain supplying parts for cars. America and the world will still need cars and Honda, Toyota and the other good/smart companies will grow and hire to meet that demand.

GM just wants a bail out so they can pay their year end bonus's

Yup, Hondas have been getting better mileage for years. The Big 3 have been in bed with Big Oil for so long they can't envision making cars that get better mileage like Hondas.

The people are voting with their pocket books and better mileage cars are winning hands down.

Good for Honda.

WhenHonda comes out with a pick-up truck like the Ford F-150or Chevy Silverado models, the Big 3 will be utterly destroyed.

After hearing how the CEOs of the auto companies are spending money, still, like drunken sailors, I am reserved to the fact ill be driving a Honda or Nissan in the near future. Besides, they are of better quality anyway. Or all the ones Ive owned in the past were. I heard this morning that the CEOs took their personal jets to visit with congress to ask for a hand out. I cant remember the cost, but it was way up in the thousands. Where as, they could have taken an airliner for around 280 bucks coach. Or even 1st class much cheaper than their own jets. I also heard the CEOs were making in the ball park of 16-20 million a year to run the buisness into the ground. They desirve nothing but to be s-canned and let someone else try to fix the problem. Not Uncle sucker with our tax dollars.[:@]

We have a personal jet at work.

6 seats plus 2 pilots.

Costs about $2,000 per hour to run.

We shall see. Toyota came out with the Tundra and check out what kind of mileage it gets..............not good. The Tundra won't even be made at the Princeton, Ind. plant any longer.

I'm not for or against an auto bailout at the moment. The facts are GM, Ford, and Chrysler's backs are against the wall with labor costs including benifits. The only people who can save the Big 3 are the employees who work there. If the Big 3 want to survive it will be due to the unions agreeing to the same wages/benifits as Toyota, Honda, etc. The cost of the Big 3 autos would go down, more money could be used for research/development and overall better autos. It wouldn't hurt if the Big 3 brought in some new engineers with a more modern approach to design as well. The foreign owned autos are well, just sleeker and more appealing to the eye.

Just bought a GM Canyon and did a lot of looking and testing vs a Toyota Tacoma. For cost comparison and fuel efficientcy the Tacoma couldn't compare.

My brother owns one, but he is not laying off employees while he is flying around asking for handouts.

Have you checked EPA mileage ratings lately?

2008 Honda Accord 4 Cylinder: 22 City/31 Highway
2008 Toyota Camry 4 Cylinder: 21 City/31 Highway
2008 Chevy Malibu 4 Cylinder: 22 City/33 Highway

2008 Honda Accord 6 Cylinder: 17 City/25 Highway
2008 Toyota Camry 6 Cylinder: 19 City/28 Highway
2008 Chevy Malibu 6 Cylinder: 17 City/26 Highway

Looks pretty comparable to me... I suspect we could do a comparison on a model by model basis and the results would be pretty darn close.

Edit: Just found this site... pretty comprehensive.
