Sure the election was a mandate edorsing the democratic party.
Bush and the Republican Party called his paltry 2.5% victory in 2004 a "mandate" and said they had "earned political capital and (were) going to spend it."
So now, with Obama's 6% margin of victory (almost 3 times larger than Bush's) and the extra house and senate seat pick up, there is no other word to describe it but "Mandate."
The people have spoken, the mandate is clear, and they have solidly rejected the politcs of fear and the platform represented by McCain/Bush.

I always figured it was a condemnation of the Republican party, more than an endorsement of the Democrats.
This wasn't a very policy-heavy election. It was mostly one of trivial BS from both sides. Attacking McCain for being too much like Bush, and Obama for being a non-citizen or a Muslim. Very few people were really talking about issues, because no one really had issues to discuss.
So while the margin was pretty big for the election, I think it had more to do with widespread disgust of the Republican party losing its principles, than with the Democrats having new, worthwhile ideas.
Wow 6 percent. Themasses have really spoken. The only mandate this represents is that a little over half of the population was willing to vote for anyone without an R after their name on the ballot. Obama's only real mandate is to try to deliver on all the grand promises of change he has made. If that doesn't happen, his approval rating will go in the dumper as quick as Bush's.
Of course, I found Bush's claim of a mandate amusing too.

Now Rocky, you know that a politician running for office can promise anything he pleases, and when the election is over and he can't deliver rest assured that it will be anyone's fault but his.

Sound familiar?

RE: Not a Mandate?
What a joke. I LMAO when Bush came out with it, so Ill LMAO at this one as well. It cracks me up. The Republicans strut like pecocks when they win making their stupid stabs at the opposition and now we have the same thing from the Democrats. What does that tell me, both parties are eat up with stupid. This is why I do not support either party. Gawd, we need a legit third party.

I appreciate the nomination Falcon, but aftermonitoring the conduct of our political leaders on both sides of the aisle over the years, Idon't thinkthat sober and moralreally need to go hand in hand in terms of how our leaders usually act, since some of the teetotalers have turned out to be pretty nasty boys

It's President Bush's fault--nothing more than coincidence that it happened right after the election.
Shoot, I bet President Bush arranged this record loss just to make BHO look bad. After all, even though he's already picked one of (if not THE) most paritsan left-wing Dems as his SoS, so there's no doubt he's going to govern from the "middle"--can't see any reason stocks would dive other than sabatoge.

Yes Obama has a mandate, however what is it? He has been on every side of every issue. Just tonight I heard direct from his mouth he was both oppossed to and for missle defense. Which statement do we believe? I've also heard him all over the board on capital gains taxes. I can go on and on with everything from tax cuts to healthcare. So I ask you, what statement/position would you consider a mandate?

You could name your party the Party of What's Happening Now.AppointLansehead of the Committee to Elect Sober and Moral Leaders.
You have a third party already. It's called independents. They out number both Republicans and Demacrats now. The problem is however, independents have no core beliefs and therefore could never have a legit primary season. With that said, they should NEVER be allowed to vote in anyone else's primary. Primaries should be closed because we the members of our party should have the right to put forth the candidate of our choice.
