I don't just take pleasure in rants on this political forum, I also am an avid hunter. I'm going up to Oklahoma to hunt waterfowl -- specifically ducks -- this weekend, my first hunt of this season. I'll be on the road in approximately 105 minutes, plus or minus 10 minutes.
When I hunt waterfowl it is often the case that the primary quarry is ducks but geese may randomly present as targets of opportunity. My 12 gauge shotgunis plenty for ducks, but I am attracted by the idea of acquiring a 10 gauge shotgun which would provide obvious advantages when hunting geese.
There aren't just a lot of 10 gauge shotguns available on the market, in fact I'll have to ask some friends for further guidance on what are the current offerings, as I do not know of any. My question for this forum, however, is are 10 gauge shotguns on the bill of fare for the gun banners in the federal government going forwards -- Obama or no-Obama? Do I need to get my 10 gauge promptly, at risk of having them outlawed before I buy mine? or is the 10 gauge an unlikely object of the gun banners's rightous indignation? If the 10 gauge is a semi-automatic does that alter the picture?
sounds like fun, and good luck. taking my oldest pheasant hunting in a couple of weeks for his birthday. i like deer, but birds are a passion.
in answer to your question, i have no idea. why would a ten guage be considered in the potential ban? would any shotgun (semo-auto aside) be considered an assault weapon? even with slugs, i can't imagine they could pierce kevlar (not that there is ever a lot of logic behind the banning of certain weapons).
and your "rants" are always well-considered and good reading. more people should "rant" like you write.
I have an Ithaca Mag ten that I bought twenty years ago. They have there pace in a goose blind, shells are a little costly. For late season high flyer's ifs the answer. Also @ eleven pounds carrying it is not for the weak of heart.
well i would personally go with the 10 guage cause i think bigger is better. But to anwser your question, if a gun ban comes up and if it as light as what clinton wanted semi's as well as pump will be affective. http://www.clintongunban.com/FactSheets.aspx?i=160
Most lawmakers probably think a 12 gauge is bigger than a 10 gauge, so I don't think you need to worry about that. As for semi-auto's, I don't see a problem there unless you get one with a pistol grip. Firearm cosmetics are a favorite for regulation.
And, if you are going all the way to OK to shoot ducks, why not come to LA? We kill more ducks here every season than anywhere.
I have a Remington SP-10 Magnum in 10 guage and love it; you will not find a more solid and reliable semi-automatic shotgun. I doubtit would ever be banned; I can not imagine a less concealable weapon and it can only hold three rounds, one in the chamber and two in the magazine.
This gun is so heavy, 11.5 pounds, that inertia significantly tames the recoil even with heavy goose and turkey loads. It is more like a strong shove than a painfuljolt. The only downside is that ammunition is expensive and not nearly as widely available as for a 12 guage shotgun.
