Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default Anyone Remember Congressman Jefferson?

He was the Democrat scumbag who was caught with $100,000 inbribe money stashed inhis fridge. Looks like his constituents have forgiven his sins. He will likely be re-elected.

I gotta puke.

Quote:
NEW ORLEANS - U.S. Rep. William Jefferson overcame the stigma of a federal bribery indictment in Louisiana's Democratic primary on Saturday, garnering enough votes in his New Orleans-based congressional district to secure a spot in a Nov. 4 runoff.

Jefferson, seeking his 10th term in Congress, faces a December trial on charges that he took bribes, laundered money and misused his congressional office for business dealings in Africa.

With about 72 percent of the vote counted, Jefferson was leading with 25 percent of the vote and appeared headed toward a runoff, most likely with former broadcaster Helena Moreno.

.......

Jefferson advances to a Nov. 4 runoff. A victory then would put him in a Dec. 6 general election in the heavily Democratic district against a little-known Republican.

Longtime New Orleans pollster Silas Lee said Jefferson, the first black elected to Congress from Louisiana since Reconstruction, remains popular among a strong core of supporters in the district

I would bet that his district has been "gerrymandered" to guarantee that that "strong core of supporters" will elect and re-elect him regardless of what he's done.

There's places worse. We are just good at finding them out. The crook you don't catch is the one doing the most damage.

Shucks, he may as well live in Alaska! Their only rep is under an ethical cloud and we all know Sen. Stevens is on trial. Both won in their GOP primaries.

Take a look at the way our districts are drawn. The Supreme Court ordered LA to create a majority-black district. Court-ordered racial gerrymandering is all you can call it. Bill Jefferson is the result.

Louisiana used to have the classy sort of criminal politicians. Edwin Edwards for example:

Not that I have investigated it too deeply, but it seems to me that given the racial make-up of the largest city in LA (67.25% African-American), the fact that there has only been one African-American representative since reconstruction, I'd say the majority of the gerrymandering that has gone on in that state most certainly has not been to the benefit of the majority population.

Also, if I recall the case correctly, I believe that the SCOTUS ruled that racial gerrymandering was not constitutional and this was a case of the district being drawn to maximize voting history, i.e., Republican versus Democrat. I admit that I could be wrong on that, but that is the way I understood it.

Not that I am defending Jefferson - the guy is obviously a scumbag. Just pointing out the flaw in the logic of a few of the posts.
