It is my gut feeling that unless something very dramatic happens during the debates, McCain has Obama beat.
By all rights Obama ought to be way ahead in the polls:
He is a member of the opposing party at a time that the sitting president is as unpopular as they come.
He hasput the standard well connected white guy on the ticket with him.
He is a much better speaker.
The press seems to be in love with him.
He has had more that enough time to pointout the differences between him and McCain.
His opponent has a woman on the ticket.
He is campaigning on the slogan of "Change", at a time that "Kick them all out" has been the mantra for quite sometime.
Obama ought to be at least 20 points ahead in the polls.
What I have been seeing is that McCain is even or ahead, and has been, in most the polls.
What my gut is telling me is that it is un-likely we will see any big revelations during the debates and that, short of that folks are going to continue supporting who they are supporting.
Obama is running out of time.
If he is going to avoid the Kerry mistake, he is going to have to do more than just keep shouting "Change" and start fleshing out exactly "what and how".
I am calling it now, McCain has Obama beat.
Thanks
Mr-Pirk

VC first let me say that it is great to see you posting again, and I am not just talking about replies but threads. You are a real asset to this board.
VC I have been hearing lots of folksthat I know that never vote republican. They are saying they won't vote Obama.
It is a different feeling out there than any other presidential vote than I can remember.
Thanks
Mr-Pirk

OK, so I just made another post with something about this...
First, remember that they have not debated at all just yet and people still question Obama because he is an african american man with a "terrorist" sounding name, on the other hand you have war hero McCain who people love because he was a POW regardless of what he says/does...who should be ahead?
ps, if you've been keeping up with the campaign the past couple weeks, McCain is givng the backless change speeches while Obama is telling what is he going to do
One part of your post I just don't get. A lot of people say Hussein is a great speaker, but in my opinionhe is a fair speech reader. Take him away from the pre-scripted speech and he stammers and stutters. JFK and Ronald Reagan were great speakers, but Hussein is not.

RE: I maybe all wrong about this but".
Ok I am going to say it and I don't want to set off a fire storm but here it goes:
All national elections are usually between two candidates and two parties. Votes are cast probably first in a partisan way. if you are a Democrat you have that ideology and will usually vote democrat. Same said for the GOP. The candidates themselves can sway some independents from one side to another which often can seal victory. This time however, it is a different ball game. We still have the two parties, two candidates with differing views all designed to court the voters. The one thing different this time is that we have"non traditional"candidates involved. We have for the first time a major political POTUS candidate who is black on one side and for the second time a white female on the VP side of the ticket. The usual partisan votes will be cast and fence sitters and independents will certainly be swayed by the debates and platforms that are there. Race and gender will play a part in this election. The Democratic Party will do everything in its power to sign up minority voters and make sure they get out to vote". based on Obama's color. If all the blacks get out and vote this one won't even be close.

Kennedy was a good speaker be it a written speech or impromptu. Reagan on the other hand was not very good without a teleprompter, just like Obama. He was already senile half way through his presidency.
