My secretary just walked into my office and proclaimed, out of nowhere, that if Obama loses the election, the sole reason will be because of the color of his skin. At first I chuckled, hoping she was joking, but as I looked at her, I could tell that she was indeed, completely serious. So I told her that it is very true that there are some people who will refuse to vote for a black man, but there will also be just as many people who will vote for Obama just because of the color of his skin. She then raised her voice and claimed that my response was completely ignorant and racist before storming out of my office. I'm still not quite sure what just happened.
This is the very reason why I refuse to take part in political discussion in the work place.
Now is the time of the year when i pretty much refuse to discuss politics with folks who are either pretty far right or pretty far left. You seldom actually discuss anything in an intelligent manner, but rather sit back and listen to them rave on.

Today, most people who are dwelling on the issue of racism have a chip on their shoulder. Look, you can vote, you can be elected to political office, you can be an executive of a company, you can got to Harvard if you are black. Let's be serious . . . the barriers have come down. If you still see some deep seated conspiracy out there against you . . . I think you need to look in the mirror when you call racism. Far from being motivated by racism, there are a lot of people -- including me -- who won't vote for Obama because (1) he is a tax n'spend, (2) anti-gun, (3) weak on defense, (4) socially/culturally liberal with precious little track record. No where in that scathing indictment was there any mention of the guy's skin color. But the folks who make hay and gain advantage by turning all things to questions of race, I suppose, will think otherwise. Theemptiness of their thought is it own reward.
