I look for several issues to judge a candidate by and try to limit those issues to ones they can affect. A President (and Congress) can have a major effect on gun rights, taxes, foreign policy, taking care of our military, land usage rights, etc. Neither a President nor congress is likely to have much effect upon abortion (I'm personally opposed to it), global warming or world opinion of the U,S. (they are going to hate us no matter who is President). A President and Congress can have some effect on the economy but there are many more factors having a larger effect upon the economy than the President and congress. I also look at a candidate's experience, sense of duty and honor, service to our country and their character. When I consider all of these issues and traits, I am left with a clear conclusion that McCain (IMHO) is a much better candidate for President.

I would say I vote on the Trust factor, Once bitten twice Shy. The Republicans have proven what they will do with our money, also with our military mens lives. I try not to just forget about corruption, also I mainly vote for the economy, and health care, and social security, because everyone gets really old and Dies.Guns have never been an issue, because our country is a country of gun owners and sportsmen.
I would never vote for an anti-gun candidate. That seems a bit myopic. At the same time, I don't know why I should have to vote for a candidate intent on destroying one of the ten civil rights. They are sworn to uphold the constitution, and the second amendment is part of the constitution. No one is anti free speech -- although some people will vomit vitriol saying, indeed, this is the case, these accusations always turn out to be pathetically distorted. No one wants to compel us to quarter troops in our homes in times of peace. No one wants to suspend habeus corpus. No one wants to subject us to unreasonable searches and seizures.
It strikes me that the second amendment is clearly a right that once lost would never be recovered. Not gonna' happen, so we better hold on to it tight now.
