Recall the response of women's rights organizations to Bill Clinton's exploitation and victimization of women? Their behavior could be characterized as classical enablers. An older person of power concocting a one-way sexual relationship with a single, 20 something intern would be evaluated in the corporate world acurately for what it was -- sexual harrassment if not sexual abuse. Women's movement talking heads would have crucified any CEO that was outed for such behavior. What did they do with Clinton? Stand by their man. What did they do when they had a choice of supporting the woman from Arkansas who claimed to have been attacked by Clinton? Didn't support the woman. I thought this was very hypocritical of them.
To my present point. I wonder how these women will repond to Sarah Palin? Will they demonize her, bash her? I'm guessing hey will. Of course, to be fair, Palin doe stake a strong pro-life stance which is in stark disagreement with the position of the women's movement. But still, you would think they might disagree with her on that issue but respect her and applaud her for kicking butt and making a place in politics as a woman. I wouldn't hold your breath to see this kind of magnanimity from these women, however. I suspect they will go into attack mode.

I think if you examine the "Women's Movement" very closely, it will become apparent that the decisive issue is abortion. Other factors don't matter all that much. If Palin were pro-abortion, they would probably be lining up behind her as a "woman." But, because she's anti-abortion, they'll demonize here on every other count.

daddyslittlegirl: Perhaps you are right. I'm not knowlegeable about the priorities of the women's movement. I assumed they were concerned about, in no ranking order, (1) abortion, (2) women's work issues, and (3) women in politics. The work issues are quite diverse including equal pay issues, promotion issues, sexual harrassment issues, etc. I know women are concerned with the subject of "the glass ceiling." This term, to my understanding, was first applied with reference to the lack of women at levels of executive management in corporations. It has been somewhat extended to women at high levels in government. Perhaps your perspective is right, which would go a long ways towards explaining the reaction of women's groups to Bill Clinton's behavior. If abortion was much more important to these groups, it would be easier for them to overlook minor peccadillos such as allegedly using his power as Governor of Arkansas to attack a woman employee and to have an admittedone-way sexual relation with an intern in his office.
Right, the Women's Movement is concerned with all those issues. But the overwhelming priority is the Right To An Abortion. I'm not sure why that is, but it allows them to overlook failings in other areas by powerful men like Clinton who vigorously support the Right To An Abortion.

I think Palin is a younger, better looking Phyllis Schlafly.
Is the NRA hypocritical? It has a definite political agenda. If you don't believe in its orthodox version of gun ownership then you are a 'gun grabber' who opposes the second amendment.
As an aside people should recognize that the National Organization of Women has folks who are reproductive rights activists and opponents. Can the NRA claim that type of diversity?
Beau Ouiville: Your rheotoric needs refinement. Empty accusations and outlandish statements don't carry much weight with me and most others on this forum.
Palin is not Phillis Schlafly. Palin may agree with Phillis Schlafly on several points. Is this a negative or something? I don't get it. I am guessing you have tried to tar Palin with association with Schlafly, but I don't think saying (1) both Palin and Schlafly are pro-life and(2) both Palin and Schalfly define marriage as something involving a man and a woman is going to reduce Palin's stature with most of us here.
With respect to the NRA, again, I don't think your suggestion that the NRA is pushing some lunatic fringe view of gun rights is going to carry much weight with people on this forum. We do not buy an assault weapon ban as a "reasonable gun control" initiative. We do not buy the Washington DC handgun ban as "a reasonable gun control" initiative. We do not buy outlawing customary and long standing hunting cartridges under the guise of outlawing "cop killers" as a reasonable gun control initiative. You are more defining your own position when you try to characterize the NRA as on the lunatic fringe.
I have no statistics on the membership of the NRA. I assume they count blue collar workers among their members as well as CEOs of major corporations. They count Ph'Ds as well as high school drop-outs among their members. They count women and men among their members. They count young and old among their members. I assume there are, in fact, gays among the NRA membership (Larry Craig, possibly?) as well as people who are pro-choice. Do you have any reliable statistics on this subject, Beau, or are you justemitting unsupported innuendo?

I had to look up Phyllis Schlafly. Didn't know much about her. She and Palin have some convictions in common, but they're quite different. To say that Palin is another Schlafly is nonsensical.
The NRA has an agenda? OMG. That would never have occurred to me. You have shattered all mygirlish illusions. Next you'lltell methat the Democratic Party, theRepublican Party and the Girl Scouts have an agenda. Naturally, you and I, and Rainman are pure as the driven snow, totally free of any agenda.
NOW has diverse interests and goals but they are just as rabidly pro-abortion as NARAL and Planned Parenthood.

Does anyone other than me see the inconsistency here?
Howard Cosell: "You're very truculent."
Muhammad Ali: "If that's good then I'm that, too!"

Where is the inconsistency? My God, how do some of you get through life with such an astounding inability to reason?
I have some convictions in common with Schlafly as it turns out. That doesn't make me another Schlafly.
I probably even have some convictions in common with Hillary Clinton. That does not make me another Hillary Clinton.
You and I probably even have some convictions in common. Sheeesh!
Sarah Palin is Sarah Palin and Joe Biden is Joe Biden. One may or may not approve of either one, but neither is a clone of someone else.
For crying out loud, THINK BEFORE YOU POST. A teenage girl should not have to take on the responsibility of pointing out the glaring lack of logic in your various irrelevant utterances.
You come across like a bunch of middle school girls making fun of another girl because her shoes aren't right for her jeans.
