So when I'm President, I will set a goal for all American middle and high school students to perform 50 hours of service a year, and for all college students to perform 100 hours of service a year. This means that by the time you graduate college, you'll have done 17 weeks of service.
We'll reach this goal in several ways. At the middle and high school level, we'll make federal assistance conditional on school districts developing service programs, and give schools resources to offer new service opportunities. At the community level, we'll develop public-private partnerships so students can serve more outside the classroom.
13th Amendment, U.S. Constitution:
Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.
Section 2. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
It's difficult to really post anything else, the irony is just so thick...
Now, I don't exactly agree with Obama here, but how would this type of service be any different than being drafted into the military? One would also be more likely to end up dead in the military.

You shouldn't even have to ask that. Serving in the military is in defense of your country. This "Community Service" idea stems fromhis ultra-liberal's Socialist/Communist ideology that says we all our service to the State.
Geez, I am beginning to really hate liberals. [:'(][:'(][:'(][:'(][:'(][:'(]

Well sorry, but whether it's in "defense of our country" or not really doesn't make much difference. In either case people are being MADE to serve. It's not like everyone who has ever been drafted went off to serve happily. Lots of people would have preferred NOT going.

I hope you are part of a tiny minority. It would be sad indeed if people could not see the difference between the honor of military service in defense of your country and Communist inspired service to the "State."
I am so disgusted, I'm ready to vomit.

Ya know, folks, you'd save yourself a whole lot of looking ...Deleted by CalHunter... if you'd check out these rumors for yourself before posting the garbage under your own name.

OK, hopefully your upset stomach is now better after reading the link Arthur P posted. He IS also calling for military service.
Ya know, folks, you'd save yourself a whole lot of looking stupid if you'd check out these rumors for yourself before posting the garbage under your own name.
Not looking ...Deleted by CalHunter... Read it yourself before you call other people ...Deleted by CalHunter... Scroll down to Section II and you'll see where he wants to require"Service to the State"of all students. Of course he doesn't use Communist terminology to describe it, but if it walks like a duck, etc....

I read it, thank you. I believe this is the part you are taking out of context?
Quote:
Studies show that students who participate in service-learning programs do better in school, are more likely to graduate high school and go to college, and are more likely to become active, engaged citizens. Schools that require service as part of the educational experience create improved learning environments and serve as resources for their communities.
I'm sure those studies come mostly from private schools, not public. But the results are obviously why he thinks it's a good idea to have a program that would allow kids to participate in volunteer work in public schools. Nowhere in the entire document does it say anything about requiring kids to work, but his goal is for 100% of students to volunteer.
Volunteerism and federal programs to support it is something that Bush himself talked about at one time.
So what's wrong with Obama talking about it and how do you imagine it to be part of some socialist agenda when it was fine and dandy for Bush?
Maybe you need to read it again, but with an open mind this time.
The gov has the right to call up militia in defense of the country. I don't think community service falls into this category, but I don't trust any government not to try to make it fit.
I don't think you can have a requirement for service attached to a government program and still use the word "volunteer". The Chinese have been experts at using this terminology for years to dress up their citizen enslavement policies. I do read things with an open mind, just not so open that my brains fall out.
BTW, this kind of thing coming out of the democratic party doesn't surprise me, but Obama's support (if not lack of outrage) of it did surprise me.
