of wheelchairs, drugs and other medical supplies collected as much as $93 million in fraudulent Medicare claims based on prescriptions from doctors who actually were dead, some for 10 years or more, a congressional investigation has found.
Millions more dollars will continue to be at risk of waste and fraud each year in the billion-dollar government-run health program for the elderly and disabled unless Medicare officials address flaws that they've promised to fix since at least 2001, according to the probe.
"Using the ID numbers of dead doctors, these scam artists have treated Medicare like an ATM machine, drawing money out of the government's account with little fear of getting caught," said Sen. Norm Coleman, R-Minn., the top Republican on the Senate panel.
Yeah, we should trust our government with our health care. There's millions more in fraud yet to be discovered.

Fact is, every government program....no, every program run by anyone, has people who will defraud the source for personal gain. Welfare, Medical care, illegal campaign contributions, even the fund for the victims of the 9/11 attacks...these have all been defrauded to some degree by opportunists.

The US "Justice Department" has a very poor record of rooting out fraud. They would rather go after petty drug offenders.

You are correct there Falcon. I've known of more medicare fraud then I care to. It's why the last thing we want is universal healthcare in this country. We need to keep it private and get the government out of the way. However, that's not what the Dems want. They are currently trying to end the medicare advantange plan where by folks are able to get the cash from medicare and by their own private insurance. It turns out it's too popular so the dems want to end the program and force every senior into the failing medicare system.

well, I would support the prosecution of petty drug offenders as well as the defrauders. We ARE a country of laws, supposedly, so while the system is not 100% every time each law is bent or broken,
I support the action of prosecution when infractions are found. I do not trivialize the actions of 'petty drug offenders' because their actions also contribute to a decline in quality of life....the quality of their OWN lives, and the quality of the lives of those around them. This is not to mention the fact that the
activities of 'petty drug offenders' support all sorts of other no-so-petty criminal activity such as murder,
kidnapping, prostitution, tax evasion, smuggling...did I miss any ?
